Hermann goering Fallschirm-panzer division 1944 warsaw
Posted by Tankluver on Sunday, April 22, 2012 6:31 PM

Did the HG division that fought alongside the Wiking division in the warsaw against the Soviets have fallschirmjager type uniforms, or at least have men that wore some fallschirmjager uniforms and men that wore regular luftwaffee uniforms?

"...fallschirmjager type uniforms..." - if you mean splinter camou, then yes.
"...luftwaffe uniforms..." - meaning the blue/grey flieger tunic with no chest pockets, yes as well, but these were most often worn under smocks or zeltbahns  and the such as the colour was not a very good camou.

Couldn't find any pics from the particular battle of Radzymin, but going by what google has both before and after that time frame, you can also see SS pattern smocks used as well as Italian pattern camou.  Headgear would be the normal army issue, but I won't say no to paratrooper type either - sod's law and all that.

Jack

Thank you very much, the first pic, the last man on the left, he has a fallschirmjager helmet! This is what I was looking for, I have the Testor and Esci fallschirmjager kits, that I plan on converting for a diorama. My dio is set around the outskirts of warsaw, with the 5th SS wiking and HG troops standing around while some equipment and SS men walk past, alot of them would have panzerfaust and panzerschreks because their waiting for the next soviet tank assault.

I should of added the date for that photo is April 25, 1945. In my opinion the paratrooper helmet was likely issued due to shortages rather than regulation wear.

Good call on the anti-tank weapons as the division had, between May and November 1944, two panzer-grenadier regiments.

It's likely they would be seen on tunics, but not necessarily always as I have come across at least one photo of panzer troops without it.  When present it would always be on the right sleeve about 16cm above the cuff.
Looks like they were also issued the army's M43 tunic and trousers in fieldgrey.

I don't know to what extreme you want to go, but you could convert regular wehrmacht soldiers.  There are 1/35 decals and PE available that would aptly fit  this project.

Items that would have to be addressed:
-M43 tunic (no pleats and straight pocket flaps)
-luftwaffe style *** eagle
-luftwaffe belt buckle
-luftwaffe badges (optional)

If this is the kit you are refferring to, be aware that these are afv troops as they are wearing the panzer wrap jacket (field grey colour denotes crew of SP gun).  Lehr was formed from tank school instructors and as a rarity, it's panzergrenadiers wore the tanker's jacket.
For your dio, you could explain this away as the crew having their vehicle destroyed and are continuing the fight on foot.

Forgot to mention collar tab insignia, beginning of 1944 they were removed.  The metal 'wings' that denote rank though could still be worn.  For panzer jackets, the traditional skull was pinned directly to the lapels - as always there are exceptions.

Thank you for explaining that, I knew that the lehr was formed from cadre. Doesn't the M43 in the pic aboce look the same?

Do you happen to know if the HG used any fixed positions such as concrete bunkers around warsaw? Were there any concrete bunkers in the vicinity of Warsaw?

At this point I only know about as much as you do and whatever the internet provides.

Within Warsaw there were bunkers, but the battle you asked about was really a mobile battle as the Germans moved out to cut off the enemy and prevent them from reaching bridges.  The small urban town of Wolomin,  22 kilometres (14 mi) north-east of Warsaw,  seems a key area where the HG elements encountered the Soviets.
