Long John Silver WIP
Posted by tvs on Monday, May 14, 2012 8:40 AM

Hi everybody!

I'm fairly new in figure painting and I'd like to improve, so my idea is to post here my work in the figure I'm currently building to receive suggestions from all of you :)

Here's the figure I've picked, it's the Verlinden version of John Long Silver pirate from Treasure Island bood (that I read when I was a kid :) ), it's 120mm and made of resin:

Here are the parts (it even includes a map! :)

Here's the body already built and primed (I haven't attached the hands yet because it would be difficult to paint some parts with the hands attached):

the head with a very diluted firrst layer of paint:

The base is almost finished, it needs more work on the rocks (they  don't look right), I've used oils to simulate wood in the chest and  the rim of the base, it's still wet so I have to wait until it dries before fixing the rocks.

Any comments, suggestions are welcome :)

Some progress in the head (using acrylic paints):

The actual colors are darker, I have to figure out how to configure the color settings in the camera :)

Thanks gamera and p38jl for your comments! I really like a "scurving" looking pirate, so I'm glad it looks that way :)

I've almost finished the head. It was a real pain to paint the white dots in the handkerchief  with the tip of the brush :) but I think the final result is good. I've also tried to make the hat look old with lot of wear but I'm not very convinced with the result (specially in the pictures, the macro mode of the camera really amplify all the bad details :))

Here are the pictures:

Thank you everybody for your kind comments!

Here's some pictures of the body (the pictures are not very good, sorry :))

I've tried to make the clothes look dirty and with heavy wear (after all he is a pirate on an island :) ), I still need to work a little more on the shoe, the white clothes and finish the hand with the sword.

Regarding the sword, I've been having a hard time painting the blade, the color doesn't look realistic, I'f anybody has any advice on how to paint it, I'd be thankful :)

Regards,

Your pirate is looking really good.  If you are new to figure painting, then I'm kinda glad I haven't replaced my camera yet.  My stuff might be best left unveiled.  lol   I really like the job you did on his face.

Thank you PNGbrat for your comment! Certainly I'm fairly new to figure painting; I used to build ww2 german vehicles but I got tired of that and wanted to focus on something different,   I'm really enjoying a lot!

Regarding the figure, I could say that it's  "finished", there are some things that I didn't like (like the sword blade), but I think I will leave it as it is and start a new one.

Here are the pictures:
