WWII USAAF wing sitting figure
Posted by ancient modeler on Sunday, June 17, 2012 5:35 AM

One of the most iconic images of a WWII airfield is one with an airman sitting on the wing of a fighter aircraft guiding the pilot. I've wanted to recreate one of these events, but have been unable to find a suitable figure. Can anyone suggest a source for this type of figure, in 1/72 hopefully.

Thanks,

Stephen

WW2 USAAF figure sets are pretty thin on the ground. There the Aifix set, one from Prieser and a few from CMK. The only one with a figure sitting on the wing is this one.

But that looks more like a pilot figure. Your only other option would be a conversion with the kneeling figure here.

Or you could get the Airfix set and convert one of those. It would be a bit more work, but the set is cheaper and they are a bit easier to work with IMHO.

Thanks for your information. I'll try the first one. I've purchases the other kits you mentioned. None have figures that I can use. I rarely use figures, and my skills are non-existent in this area, but I just may be able to convert the first figure. I'll have to see after I get the kit.

Again, thanks

I'd be keen to see how you get on. I have quite a few USAAF dio's lined up, and as you have found out, figures are thin on the ground. I did my first ever figure conversion a couple of months ago, slightly altering two Aifix USAAF figures. It was only a small conversion, but i was happy with the end result and i plan on doing more in the future.
