AJlAFLECHE: Thanks for the suggestion, but the figures I paint are too small for the style holder Marion is using. Besides, I don't do this that seriously enough. The vice is a far more stable tool (and it's freestanding to help avoid confusion.)
The white paint acted more like a wash than paint, so it pooled up in the creases but stayed of the ridges. 
Eventually it was covered enough.-
The decal was then applied to the shield.-
The figure's base was too small, (it would have started tipping all over the place had I left it), so I epoxied a scrap piece of styrene as a base.-
AJLAFLECHE: This is the exact size of the figure. (The two previous Greek soldiers are pretty much the same size.)-
Finished pics. The base was painted with MM Italian Dark Brown and covered with loose ground foam.-
This was a fun send- off project, now for the 3 month hiatus!
