Best Material For Sculpting and Rebuilding Figures
Posted by fificat on Sunday, September 30, 2012 3:32 PM

I am getting more bold in my figure work.  Even add eyes now.  I need to modify two French tankers, and wonder what to use to make body parts and to extend coats, etc.  I saw on one thread the chap talked of using "Duro", but this appears to be a European thing.

What is the best sculpting material to use in doing this kind of work, in your opinion?  I have used Squardron white putty, but am not happy with this at all.   Mixing it with liquid glue is better, but not really satisfactory.

If you can also mention the best place to get the material you recommend, I would appreciate it.

TIA

Have a look at Aves Apoxie Sculpt.  It's a two-part epoxy putty and I think you'll be very satisfied with it.

I like to use Milliput for figure conversion work. It is a two part epoxy putty that is available in several formulas. It is easy to find on the internet. If you are in the NJ area it is available at AAA Hobbies in Magnolia, NJ.

For adding coat-tails, lengthening jackets or shirts, etc, I like to use epoxy ribbon, a two-part ribbon that you can find in about any auto-parts store.. It's yellow and blue, tear off a chunk and knead it until it turns green.. Then press it paper-thin between two sheets of waxed paper..

For lengthening arms and legs, and filling in torsos, I use either Testor's White (thins with rubbing alcohol, so it doesn't attck your styrene while you work it) or Bondo  Red Glazing Putty, again, available at any auto parts store.. Thins with Testor's Liquid Cement...
