Theodoric's Dragon Bust
Posted by Theodoric on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 7:02 AM

Hi everyone!

I know this is not exactly "minifigure", but I think this is a good place for him, since the paint will be the same challenge.
I didn't work on it for a long time (lack of freetime), but now I continue the work on it, and hopefully I'll finish it this time

I made a quick homepage for him where you can find a link for more pics about the sculpting process:
(Also you can sign up for news and the release date)

Ohhhhh that's awesome, I wish I could sculpt half that well!

Looking forward to seeing how you paint him!

Very cool, Theo!

Gamera, it's easy... you just remove everything that doesn't look like a dragon.

Yeah, super detail there!

Funny I was thinking about the - what did he call it - 'consummate vees' that Stongbad was adding to the back of Trognar: The Burninator for back spines...

Well, I just read your webpage, and got my answer.

Is Chavant a sulfur based clay?  What 3D software do you use?

Chavant is a Non-Sulphurated Plasteline (NSP). It's oil based.

I didn't use 3D software, everything is handmade on this dragon.

But if you ask what I use at work, then the answer: Softimage XSI, Zbrush, Topogun, Photoshop, xNormal, UV Layout, Mudbox (for base textures)

Chavant looks nice to work with; not too soft to leave fingerprints, but not too hard either.

I've only heard of three of those pieces of software, and have only used Photoshop.  I'm cheap, so I use Blender. Whistling

Yep, this brown Chavant is the Hard version. In room temperature you can carve it nicely (scales). In the beginning when you work with the base mass you can use heatgun to make it softer to form.

Well, if you a hobby 3d artist, it's ok. But if you became professional you should switch to Softimage or Maya.... or Max. I prefer Softimage after several years Max using in game industry.

Thanks Theodoric, interesting to know what professional grade modeling materials you use, both the clay and software.

Btw: just how many times did go back and re-sculpt the teeth?

You're welcome :)

You don't want to know... :) That was a really hard thing to find a good proportion. 3+ times at least...
