Reshaping figures
Posted by shivinigh on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 2:45 PM

I have some 1/72 scale figures that are 1 piece plastic and want to reposition their arms and legs for a diorama. What is the best way of doing this. Someone suggested boiling water.

Hello!

That kind of depends, what plastic is used for the figures. If it's this soft, rubbery plastic (polyethylene?), it will be hard to do anything with them at all (like many paints don't want to stick to that plastic). But in case of hard polystyrene, I'd cut and reposition the figurtes as necessary. In case of complicated surgeries you could use wire to position the joints temporarily and then putty them once the pose is done, but that's complicated. You might also want to check this web page:

where I describe howq I modified the tankers to fit the subject I had in mind.

Hope it helps, have a nice day

The water method won't work. If the limb is going to be a totally different angle, cut it at the join and trim the ends to the right angle. Re join with a small piece of wire and use filler. Just make sure the limb is the right length.

Try to start with something simple. I wanted a couple of USAAF aircrew walking to wards a B-24. I just altered the position of one leg on one of the figures. It was a simple start, but it worked as it didn't matter that the two were dressed the same in this case.
