Working with a Vintage Garage Kit or "How to Make a Silk Purse out of a Sows Ear"
I was commissioned last Fall to paint a vintage Vampirella kit. I agreed to it site unseen. I should have asked to see it first... The model was cast in the old caramel colored semi translucent and brittle resin from the late '80's to early '90's. The model had extremely bad mold slippage during casting and had 1mm to 2mm displacement on the arms and legs. Since this was an early casting it was not vacuum cast either. So there was numerous pin holes and many more sub surface pin holes. The final problem was that the first person who started the model ground down the arms and legs and lost a lot of anatomy in the process. I used Aves Epoxy Sculpt to fix the seams and pin holes and a lot of wet sanding. To fix the sub surface air holes that popped up I used some Liquitex modeling paste (acrylic) and Citadels Liquid Green Stuff to fix those problem areas.
All of the repairs are seen in light gray putty at this point. I used a lot of foam centered sanding sticks and pads to smooth out the model.
