Combat Garden Gnomes (A Work In Progress)
Posted by bitbite on Friday, June 20, 2014 6:25 PM

"Garden Gnomes are widely regarded as friendly, whimsical, peaceful little creatures...

Not anymore!

I don't know what it was that finally prompted the gnomes to take up arms. Maybe it was one too many gopher invasions. Perhaps it was the overwhelming gaudiness of neighboring plastic pink flamingos encroaching on their ancestral homeland. Or maybe they just finally got tired of the media portraying them as traveling morons. Either way, they've had enough and they're out for blood..."

Yes, combat garden gnomes.  After serious consideration about which ones to get (they come in a variety of poses), I bought these two guys to protect my new home.  Here are some pictures of them with a beer can for scale reference.  My first step will be to sand and file them before I attach their weapons and the one guy's hand. DrinksSmile

The combat gnomes:

.50 cal gnome front:

.50 cal gnome side view.  It looks like I'll have to scratch build the rest of his tripod as it only has one leg right now.

.50 cal gnome's barrel and ammo box (and I guess, my toes somehow got in there too.  I cropped and resized all the on photobucket but it looks like nothing I did there got saved) Sad

Standing firing gnome:

Standing firing gnome's M-16 and hand:

Update:  Went to sand standing firing gnome and broke his right ear off.  Didn't take long to run into trouble on this one.  Time for Krazy Glue!  Toast

All you need is a grenadier and you can have your own gnome Do Lung bridge scene in your garden...

That'd be cool.  String up a bunch of Christmas lights and . . . but the M-79 gnome is pretty much the only one they don't make.  Sad

That's awesome Bitbite!!! You need some gnome riding into battle using dogs for horses.

Reminds me of the good old days of playing Dungeons and Dragons and my gnome charging with his blade right at some ogre's crotch... always good for forcing the monsters to make a morale check or run...

I think that's a over the top.  I'm striving for realism here. Wink

Go on, laugh.  Mock me!  But when it happens don't come knocking on my door trying to save yourself.

Glued the ear back on that I broke off, sanded 'em up, drilled out the barrels of their weapons and the front site of the M-16, and primed them.

They'll be needing names.  I think Helmut for M-16 gnome and Carlos will be the .50 cal gnome. DrinksCool

Interesting angle there. They've already got the SAS beards.  I could paint them as WW2 SAS guys, and . . . for lack of a politically correct term . . . scratch build the "headgear" as seen here.

I knew there had to be a connection here if I thought about it long enough!

The friggin' gnomes bred these horrible things to turn the giant hamster wheels that drove their space going sidewheelers!!! (don't ask, really, you don't want to know...)

I found a can of old (and when I say, "Old," this thing has to be circa 1992) Model Master OD spray paint amongst my model supplies and figured it would work well for Helmut and Carlos' uniforms.  Some hot water unplugged the nozzle and it worked!

Now they have another color.  For whatever reason (Photobucket's fault, not mine), it's sideways.  Clicking on it should fix that problem.  DrinksAngry

Ah nice! Too bad that in the name of camo they've had to dye their jaunty red caps!

Nah, SP trained them and they're loyal.

Carlos grows a beard and gets some cover:

Thank you, sir.

I think I'm about to run out of white paint though . . . Huh?

Carlos gets a second coat of beard, first of eyebrows, and eyes.  Helmut gets first coat of all three.  And I am officially out of white paint now so progress grinds to a halt.  Those little bottles that last so long on plastic kits go pretty fast on Combat Gnomes.  Sad
