New Monthly Figure Column in Fine Scale

Hey guys,

I'm not sure if you know or not but Fine Scale has a new monthly column devoted solely to figures. Its first issue is the January 2016.

The column will be anything related to figures, assembly to groundwork. This could be a 1/9 scale German down to a 1/72 Russian pilot or historical figures to comic/fantasy and even figures for automobiles.

My name is Joe Hudson and Fine Scale reached out to me about this opportunity and I was very excited to want to help out.

I have been painting figures for some time and have learned a lot along the way that I look forward to sharing with you and the readers what I have learned.

If there is anything that you might like to see done in a future column please feel free to let me or the magazine know.

Good to know. Used to paint 54mm years ago; thinking now about re-starting with smaller 28mm figures, using Vallejo paint--which I don't know anything about. I hope to learn lots.

I read the article, Joe, and found it to be very informative. I will be looking forward to this now in every issue. I haven’t painted many figures, but, in the future I will be using more figures in Diorama’s.

I do have one question, from what I have read, most figures are painted with acrylics. Are acrylics better to paint figures, or are enamels a good choice too?

Glad to hear you are thinking about getting back to painting. Down the road I'm planning on painting a few mini's too. I am using pretty much all Vallejo paints too. Joe

I'm glad you liked the article and found it informative. I hope that you will enjoy the future ones as well. I can't say that the acrylics are better or worse. I used to be an oil painter but decided to give the acrylics a ho. I like my results better with the acrylic than what I used to achieve with the oils but I know some of the best miniature painters in the world and a few still use enamels and oils. No reason why you can't use both, actually. I use enamels mainly for blocking, but I blend acrylics for smoother transitions. Layering or wet method, there is a lot to discuss here.

Looking forward to lending my knowlege to this new addition!

Lots to learn and teach! From figure assembly, blocking, detail painting, washes, etc. The list is extensive. This will be a welcome addition to my time here at FSM! :D

I enjoyed the first two article. I build a lot of 35th diorama's and have always struggled with figures, and i have recently gotten into larger scale busts. Any help and advice is most welcome. I'll be looking forward to your next article.

Thanks. I'm planning on doing a few diorama/vignettes figures in the future. I'm also planning on using some plastic figures and adding resin heads and hands too. I'll be glad to help with anything I can. I'm going to also plan on doing some larger scale bust and figures too. Joe

It is good to see coverage of figures. I enjoyed you article. I build a lot of 1/25th scale dioramas. there is not much to choose from in the way of figures and most need to undergo orthopedic surgery to be of any use. It would be nice to see some coverage of 1/24 & 1/25th scale figures as well as all the others.

Hey Carl, Thanks and I'm glad it helped. Funny that you mention this scale. I just got a 70mm , roughly 1/24 scale,Battle Chick in today that I'm going to paint along with a 1/20th scale F1 driver. I'm also painting up a 70mm General Chamberlain from the Civil War. Is there a certain time period or era you are doing or looking for? Joe

I am so excited thats going to be added, fegurie is that one area that seems to draw people into every direction. So i do have one, i recently got 35 scale civil war feguires there plastic is not the same as say tamiya ones?. Everyting are premolded, everything on them. What kind of paint would you recommend?, its the ones. That each feguire comes with there own bases.

Hey, I'm glad you are looking forward to it. I think I know the type of figures you are talking about. The trick here is that you need a good primer on the figures and then you can pretty much use any type of paint. If you have access to an airbrush I would airbrush Tamiya Light Grey. I think it's number XL19 but I'll double check on that. If you don't have an airbrush there are some grey primers you can get in a can. Hope this helps, Joe

Joe, I model mainly construction , agricultural and comercial vehicles and tend to place them in dioramas. That means modern civilian figures usually as drivers and equipment operators. most of my figures only get a basic paint job. But I`m alwas trying to glean info from any source. 70mm figures may prove to be feed stock for future drivers.
