Panzer Striker,
Kalmbach has a pretty good book out called
How to Paint Realistic Military Figures, second edition
By Lynn Kessler, Don Winar

http://store.yahoo.net/kalmbachcatalog/12240.html

here is a good online article abt faces:
http://www.ww2modelmaker.com/articlepub/GinoPoppe_Faces_article.htm

and another that might help:
http://www.minitaly.com/paolo/guida_faccia_e.htm

try searching google or infoseek for 'painting faces' or 'painting figures'
you will find a ton of stuff.

Also look up Vallejo Acrylics and go to the model color section for a great tutorial on painting with acrylics in general.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Sheperd Paynes book is really good, i'm currently reading it and I have learned quite a bit. I havent actually used the techniques yet but I plan on it once I get to the painting stage of my current project.

Verlinden has a great book which I recomend to beginners called "The System" Volume 1: Figure Painting, here's the link http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1930607334/104-2822428-3795159?v=glance.

The method is very easy to get the hang of and yields nice results in a surprisingly small amount of time. As your skills improve you'll find other techniques that will ultimately yield better results, but Verlinden's method is a great no non-sense way to get the hang of figure painting and get show quality results without spending half your life experimenting.

Shep Paine's book Building and Painting Scale Figures (seems to be out of print, but check Amazon, they can probably track down a used copy) is also a great resource with lots of different techniques. Then there's Bill Horan's book Military Modeling Master Class in which he outlines his method of painting, which many find to be a bit difficult to master. You can't argue the results though, and it's no surprise why he's been one of the world's best for many years. Here's the link for that one http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1872004091/ref%3Dnosim/broughsbooks/103-7070609-3959062

there are several books out there, but nothing substitutes for hard work and experience, I'll post some pictures. jsut take the figures in one step at a time. I started learning how to do figures by doing solid color uniforms and stuff and solid color skin. then i moved to shadows and washes on the uniforms. then i moved to skintone warm tint face with a dry brush of tan. then i added shadows to the faces. then i eventually moved into camoflauge and that is where i am now. finally got the basics of splinter camo and am learing pea patterns. ill post pics of both at a later date. ive been teaching my self for 4 years give or take a year or two, give it some time and ull learn fast. Also dont hesitate to use figures that have been on ur shelf for a while, to experiment with and learn with... what is ur best work at one time, 7 months down the road ull say MY GOD! did i actually paint that and put it on my shelf??? Saves a ton of money too.

Here's a method that gave me great results on my first (and only as of yet) figure in 20 yrs.

I only wish my results were as good as Mark's. It probably helps to start with premium (resin) figures rather than nearly-OOB Tamiya figures.

o ya panzer, that what i suggested dosnt mean i didnt use books, i jsut bought two to help me out, not a ton of kalambach books... i am not rich by any any any strech of the imagination so they are a bit pricy for me. if u have the money, GO for the books! =D but if not, use my method. gave me satisfactory results fairly quickly!
