Hi Nate,
Welcome to modeling! I'm not new to the hobby but, I am new to this forum, and this is my first reply so I'm hoping that I don't break any protocol by offering you my two cents worth of opinion.
Since picking up the glue and paint again as an adult, I have explored every topic (almost) and you know what I've found out? I love them all! I started with aircraft both WWII and modern, went thru a StarTrek phase, I recieved some monster figures as a gift, and for the past 8 years or so I've been doing stock cars, living in Western North Carolina that is a natural thing;-). Now I am exploring armour and artillary with the war proceeding along. The main thing is, what intrests you? More than likely you can find a model covering that subject, and with time, you can learn to make what you can't find, and that is what makes it a great hobby.
Remember the hobby shops are great just to get yourself some ideas also, you can not get any better inspiration than FSM magazine I have had more ideas after getting a copy, it is great.
Well nuff' said I've been too long winded, I hope its helped though.
