an aircraft junkie needing some figure advice!
Posted by saltydog on Monday, March 29, 2004 7:31 PM
hello fellows, this is my first post over here in the "Figures and Misc." thread. kinda feels like walking into a classroom for the first time in front of a bunch of people you dont know. i do recognize some of the user names though. are you guys normal? LOL.

on a more serious note, im interested in knowing what you guys use for painting your figures. i would prefer to stick with acrylics. i read some where in another thread that vejelo (i dont know if thats spelled correctly) was a good quality paint. any recommendations and tips will be appreciated. i want to hand paint my cockpits and pilots and need some advice. thanks fellows. later.

I'm a die hard oils man myself, with some Humbrol Enamel to boot, but Vellejo are supposed to be excellent and they are designed specifically for figures. Others here can give you better advice on the specifics of using that brand though. I prefer the longer work time of oils for figures, as I like paint the shade and highlights. Oils also have a skinlike texture and seen to breath like skin when dry. I like that as well, but a lot of the masters are using acrylics these days and their work is as impressive as any done with oils or by airbrush.

saltydog;
I have been experimenting with the Vellejo paints and find them excellent although I will stick to oils for fleshtones. Like the blending results from the oils
Wayne I enjoy getting older, especially when I consider the alternative.

Hi all!

Acrylics, oils or enamels can produce good results painting figures. Each kind of paint have its own method of painting, so I think results depends on your own style and techniques. I have been using both enamels and Vallejo acrylic colours for a long time and acrylics are really popular paints nowadays. But I want to say is that no matter what you use because the difference is what you want to paint indeed.

There was a deep change in figure painting concept one decade ago (just after acrylics arriving to the market) and changed to `light from above` concept (zenithal light?) but the fact is that you can get same effect using different paints because the change was about the painting concept, not the medium itself.

So use the paint you like the most, specially if you are talking of small figures (1/72 - 1/48) for aircrafts, any will work fine undoubtely.

Best regards!

thanks guys. i found a nice little vellejo purchasing place on the web. i think ill go ahead and get the beginners pack and try them out. im decent at mixing and getting the colors i want since my favorite acrylic paint is tamiya. they have limited color selection ya know. anyway, this is probably gonna stirr up some controversy as it does over in the airbrushing thread, what is a good quality set of brushes. thanks. later.
