1/35 SS Panzer commander and Scharführer (Dragon)
Posted by Hobbie on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 2:00 AM

Hi there,

Being back into model kits after a very long pause, I had a sudden urge to go back to 1/35 armored and figures (after getting bogged down with my beloved airplanes)...

Those two are my first in a really long time... both old Dragon productions.

The Panzer commander is from the Tiger Aces box (Wittman crew) ; it's a salvage : I built it back in the day and did an horrible paint job with humbrols. But the built was ok so I worked it with airbrush cleaner and a lot of Q-tips, primed it with Tamiya rattle can primer and went to town, using the Tamiya camo patterns as reference.

The scharführer is from the HJ Division Norrey-en-Bessin kit.

Flesh parts are done with oils ; I'm not very satisfied, I'm getting the hang of it but it's still far from good in my opinion...

Uniforms are done with mostly with Tamiya paints ; I unfortunately used Mr Hobby for the base green and forgot it wasn't flat ; so the figure ended up with a slight sheen... I hope I'll resolve this with a matte varnish coat.

Small mistakes on the tanker : shoes should be brown, not black, and there shouldn't be a red line on the cap and shoulder pads (plus I was a little too heavy handed on it)

Collar tabs on the scharführer are still kinda sloppy, but I think I can live with that...

It was my first serious take at the german camo patterns ; it's not exactly as it should be but I think I got it now. Should do a better job next time.

I plan on using them on an Kursk diorama but as I screwed up nearly every project so far, I won't start running my mouth and jinx it Whistling

Thanks for checking out :-)

Those camo patterns look great and at that scale!  As you mentioned,  a dull coat to knock down the sheen will finish them.  Well done.  I'm no german uniform expert but I think the canteen strap going from the cap around the canteen should be the same as the cap color.

Thanks,

John

Thanks a lot for the kind words! :)

About the canteen, I followed Dragon's instruction but I just quickly crosschecked with google ; as a matter of fact, there are a lot of variants of WWII german canteens!

Nice job on those uniforms, i have found the Osprey book on SS figures really useful for all the different patterns as well as equipment.

I have been building figures for years and am only just getting to grips with faces, the hardest part i find.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Thanks :-) Strangely, I'm struggling more with the wermacht/fallschirmjäger camo pattern ; I was working at the same time on a Fallschirmjäger but I don't feel I get the camo smock right, I can't get those sharp edges on the green and brown spots, and there are those thin dark green stripes all over... I'll get back to it but so far, I found the pea dot patterns easier to reproduce!

I have struggeled with the rain effects as well. I can't find anyway to get those streaks fine enough. I was planning on doing them for a couple of what if builds but in the end i just went with the 3 colour camo. I have not done a Pea pattern yet, need to do a late war SS build and try one.
