Verlinden 120mm Desert Storm MOPP 4 figure-part ID

Well it seems clearly based on the M17 masks. As you said before, Verlinden's sculptor may have had insufficient info, or just didn't care if they got it right. This is a good sculpt; but not a very accurate one. Some decontamination units still had very old M9 masks in the Gulf War; these were kept because of the ease of swapping their filter canisters compared to M17 cheek filters. But this is clearly not an M9 mask with its big nose and single large canister. I think we'll just have to settle for it being a nice, but not very accurate figure.

it's missing the inlet valve assembly on the right side of the M17 mask, too.

I can't zoo in quite tight enough--is the drinking tube assembly on the front?  The canteens have NBC caps on the.

VLS appears to have used something other than an M-17 mask to model from.  Perhaps an M7, which had only one inlet (unless I'm remembering wrong, I was only ever issued M17, M17A1, and then M40)

A lovely paint job. Something else I noticed on this figure - it's missing the inlet valve assembly on the right side of the M17 mask, too. This mask had a filter and valve assembly on both cheeks. 

Beautiful job.  That backdrop brings out the "green-ness" of the ensemble, too.  Which is a pain to model, since it's green on green on green, and nearly the same green all over.

Just noticed VLS did the "wrap around" over-boots.  Those were in The Book, but not much in the field; the "galoshes" style were much more common.  They were much better footing, if not as convenient to stow in an NBC pack bag.

Still an outstanding job with this.

I tend to agree.  Verlinden kits are generally nice but some of the detials are hit and miss.  I know the straps were missing , but just decided not to mess with them and paint the model as-is. Im happy enough with the kit the way it came out, given its issues.  I like the mold, the cut and mainly the proportions which are quite offten strange with VLS models. 

Does look like a spool of MX-6894/WD-36 telco wire.  If you squint a bit.  Wire feeds out of the center hole, if that's what it's meant to be.

With a number of Verlinden figures, it seems the sculptor was only given a photo, and they "filled in" (or not) what they couldn't see.

This figure has quite a few other accuracy errors, if such things concern you. For example, the M6 hood is modeled being worn here. The hood has two straps attached to the back; one goes under each arm and Velcros to the front of the hood. These straps help hold the gas hood in place on the shoulders. The attachment points are modeled on the front, but the straps and their attachment to the back of the hood are missing. Given some of the things they did model, it's odd the sculptor ignored or missed this fairly prominent feature, while including others. 

Nice to have figured it out and on your own, determination and persistence name of the game.

My continued  research  shows it is a half mile commo wire reel.   I never saw one of these, just the open spool type
