Airbrushing figures
Posted by Tankluver on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 3:47 PM

I had this idea about a month ago, i thought about airbrushing my figures like i would an AFV. I use the shadow method painting a kit all black then lighting with white on the most sun exposed areas. My question is would this same method work the same on figures. Painting the shadows black and painting the exposed areas white. Then finishing it off with the base color of the uniform ?

I've not tried it exactly that way, but yes have sprayed figures with the airbrush - always spraying from the top with successive lighter colours.  In 1/35 scale you might find the final colour will fill in the shallower folds quite quickly.  Really depends on the angle you will hit the surface with.

You should try it and post the results here.

Jack

I used to be able to post pictures but now i cant. i May need one of those phot sharing accounts.
I tried airbrushing fallschirmjager but it didn't look right when it was all said and done. Also have attempted some DAK figures with Scale 75 paint but only did the vase coat so far.

I've tried it but not had that much luck with it. I do however sometimes drybrush the figures from the top down laying lighter colours on the tops of the figure and then mix up about 50% uniform colour and 50% matte finish and spray them a few times to tone down the contrast and blend everything together afterward.

If you search on YouTube, you should be able to find videos by painters who paint a figure almost entirely using an airbrush.

I find it tricky enough to master painting them by hand, and I'm still too much of an airbrush novice, to use an airbrush to paint my figures.

I do want to try it on larger figures, though.  I have some anime figures in my stash, and one in progress, where an airbrush would be useful to lay down skin colors on large areas.  I've also got a female figure which I want to paint as wearing stockings, and the airbrush can be used to achieve that effect.

Yeah I've done the YouTube videos. I feel like airbrushing is only good if you can get a few figures done. For me i feel like i put to much paint or to little to make it worth it at times.

Andrea Miniatures put out a book some years ago on painting female figures.  It included a chapter on using the airbrush to paint a figure that was either 90mm or 110mm.  Again, it was used as some of us have described, to paint large areas of exposed skin, and to do fine opaque layers to simulate nylons.  But the author of that article also described doing shading.  The fine details, such as the model's face, he painted by hand.  If you can find that book, it's a good reference to have.

I recall seeing an article about shooting black on a figure oposite of the light source.  A kind of preshading for figures if you like.

Thanks,

My question is would this same method work the same on figures.

Not only does it work, its the ONLY way to do figures!!

Been doing it for years and years.  Airbrushing gives you effects you can't get with a brush.  But you should practice on some green army men until you get a feel for your particular airbrush.  I'm too lazy to put up a video tutorial on this matter Whistling, but i wish you luck

I've done it on larger scale figures and they've come out very well. On 1:35 scale I like to airbrush the head but you still have to revert to hand brushing to get certain highlights. With the uniforms it is also the same thing. I get a great base coat with the airbrush, but when it come to shadow washes and highlights I feel the hand brush is still the best for painting control.

The april edition of FSM Form & Figure article discusses using an airbrush to do a very nice Napoleonic figure.  It is a 200mm figure so on the larger size.

Thanks,

Yes, the mini painters call it zenithal highlighting and masters like Vince Venturella and others swear by it.

I challenge you to paint the eyes on a 54mm figure with an airbrush.

Doesn't count, smart guy!  The brush must be fully assembled, loaded with paint, and use the compressor.

I airbrushed the black trousers on this figure. The mid tone was sprayed at about a 45° angle and the highlights at about 21° approximately.

Go light and go slow. It's not too hard.
