German WWII headgear help needed
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, April 24, 2004 5:20 AM
Hi,
I'm looking for good photo references to the headgear worn by Heer dispatch riders in 1944. I'd also like to know if the always wore the rubber overcoat?

Hi,
I've several books at home dealing with the German army, and as far as I can find, there were no special helmets designed for motorcyclists. They just wore regular issued ones together with goggles. As for the protective rubber coat, it was first introduced in 1934 and was originally intended to be worn by motorcycle messengers and riflemen. I'd imagine the weather would dictate when it would be used. Hope this is of some help.

Prior to the war, durng field trials they wore the NSKK style helmet. But during the war, the normal german helmets as jgeratic pointed out were used. The only other variant you'd see in helmet would be those used by luftwaffe paratroop units.

The motoring coat had a cape attached to the back and the lower skirting could be fastened around the legs making it look like a set of overalls.

One of the things that show up in alot of the photos of the m/c riders is that the gas mask cannister is worn on the front over the chest. There is also a tendency to sling machine guns or rifles across the chest as well.
