Color help please!
Posted by panzermedic on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 4:47 PM

Hello All,

I am having problems trying to pin down the colors for the Splinter M43 camo pattern for German uniforms. Tamiya is saying to use XF-10 Flat Brown, XF11 J.N. Green, and XF-65 Field Grey. My research has a wide range of coloring. Anyone have recomm? This will be on 1:48 scale uniforms.

Thank you in advance!

That is about as good as anything really. As with any colours the listed "standard" is one thing and the reality somehing else again. Colours (as your research showed) can vary massivly so just pick something close and you will be correct.

Look at Vallejo Panzer Aces paint line. They have specific colors for German army splinter camo pattern clothing, that go by those names. I can't vouch for those particular colors, but I do like their other colors that I have tried. Just be sure to use a good primer on your figure, as with any Vallejo paints.

An avid aviation and sci-fi modeler, I decided last year to back a Kickstarter by Plastic Invasion and received their "Scale Modeling WW2 - German Camouflage Uniforms" book as part of that.  Assuming you're referring to the Splittertarnmuster camouflage for the Fallschirmjäger uniforms (remember...aviation guy here), the paints that these guys used were Vallejo Model Color:

  • 70.866 Green Grey
  • 70.984 Flat Brown
  • 70.968 Flat Green
  • 70.819 Iraqi Sand

They also used 76.512 (Dark Green), 514 (Dark Brown), and 518 (Black) Vallejo Model Washes.

I highly recommend checking them (Plastic Invasion) out and looking at their Indiegogo campaign, where you can get a copy of the book.  It's extremely detailed and walks through step-by-step painting of figures in multiple German camouflages.  Given my complete lack of figure painting experience, I consider it a fantastic investment to learn how to start!

(N.B. Simply a backer, no other connection to these guys.)
