Modifying Figures' Hands
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, September 19, 2004 9:56 AM
Greetings!
I'm currently building a MiniArt 1/16 German Knight and I want to re-shape/modify the hand so it more holds the battle axe more realistically.
Any suggestions on how to make an open hand close around a handle?
Thanks!

In order to bend Sir Knight's fingers around the battle axe, you need to perform some surgery. In order to perform the surgery, you need a very tiny saw. I use a 1/2 inch piece of .02" x .01" jeweler's saw blade placed in a pin vise. This must be positioned with the teeth pointing towards the handle, so that it cuts on the pull stroke, as these break very easily, especially if you try to cut by pushing them. Cut small wedges out from the inside of the fingers where the joints would naturally be and reposition the fingers around the axe. This may take some trial and error to get it just right. Cement, putty and reshape as necessary with needle files. This is SOP for all my figures.

Thanks!!!
That sounds wayyy better than what I was thinking; heating the part and bending the fingers!
Many thanks again

I might add; you may need to drill out and pin the fingers with some wire or brass rod and bend them into position. This trick also works well with the wrists.
