I'm having the same problem. I have a 3x8 foot sandtable I'm doing that diorama on. I have three blackhawks, 2 little birds (I had to use the OH-6 Loach and modify) 3 5 ton trucks, 6 humvees, a few technicals, etc. I don't know what to do about somalis. I got an email back from Fred Boyer who said he didn't know. Someone is gonna come out with somali figures, and when they do, they better be in packs of 100!

this is 2. we're movin'

I can't remember the company but somebody puts out Taliban and northern alliance soldiers. not exactly what you're looking for but they are comparable
I'll do some searching and try to find the company

ICM makes a kit of 4 Afghani fighters, it's called mujahideen. that's about all there is on the market, except for a model BM-21 rocket launcher with 4 taliban manning it (also made by ICM)

I am guessing now- Blackhawk Down in 1/35 scale? Sounds good.
As the Somali rebels were not a proper military force, but rather a band of criminals with an effective blackmarket for buying arms, they used all and anything that came their way. You should be able to use any of the Dragon Modern Soviet Series figures and weapons such as AK-47's, SA-7 Grail and even RPG Launchers that is in there. The uniforms are basically fatigues which varied from Eastern Block to U.S with ordinary headgear such as bandannas. Since it is quite hot in Somalia, they bareley wore shirts.
I hope it helps you.

thanks for your responses guys, hopefully will come out with them.... I have a great array of weapons due to the fact that Somalia is one of the biggest black markets for weapons, but the problem is on what the somalis wore which was whatever they could get their hands on.... mostly civilian clothing

USRLTW to be honest with you all my rangers have come from mixing parts from many different kits, mostly Dragon, I used parts from the 82nd Airborne, 101st, SF, marines tank killers, and so on, I used both modern and vietnam era figures.... some of the modifications I did with putty, I took the part and the equipment needed and voila, if you need more information or if you have any particular question please let me know

I'm collecting kits for a 1/35 somalia dio. What I've picked up is the dragon viet cong kits. Haven't even opened them yet, but they have the right weaps, (aks/rpgs) and I assume "in-scale skinny". The vc pj's also give you some "wiggle room"...Not the voice of experience, but the best I could thik of.

You could put a pile of chicken bones to represent the somalis.Approve [^]Evil [}:)]

or you could try the ICM Muajahadeen kit as mentioned above. I have the kit and it should work out for you with some simple modifications.

good luck!

Mark956: I wish I could Scratch build figures, it would make it so much easier, but I don't have the finesse to build figures from clay or any other substance as sad as that might sound.

Thanks CKfredrickson, that's a nice figure and a good start for what I want, a little bit of sanding here and there and voila!!!

I'm plannig a blackhawk diorama,too.
The Rangers will be modified Dragon figures with kneepads and ranger equipment (different from regular army).
The "Skinnies" are a problem. I got myself the african heads from Hornet ( www.hornetandwolf.com ) and wanted to put them on Verlindens, ICM and Warriors Taliban warriors (I bought all those kits). The problem is that the Taliban have tunics, that must be removed, and their clothing makes them appear way too fat for somali rebels.
So I hope someone comes out with african militia figures before I start converting the talibans.
BTW where did you get the technicals?

Klaus

I know Verlinden makes a couple of civilian sets, theyre like cameramen or something, all you need to look for is civilians and modify them a little cause thats all those guys are is militia. The only problem would be that it would get kind of expensive with a bunch of resign figs. Hope this helps

You might try your local model railroad hobby shop. I am running the same problem finding civilians for my vietnam memorial dio 1/35 scale. The scale you need is call 1 scale. it runs between 1/29-1/32. there are several companies that made them.

I watched a show on the BlackHawk Down author on the History Channel and they interviewed a handful of soldiers and the captured pilot that were there. It was a horrible chain of events that took place in Somalia. I didn't realize how many soldiers and airmen were lost and all the injuries...very tragic.
