civil war

I forget the company name but I have accumulated a ton of these little civil war figures. They come in box with painting instructions on the back, humbrol paints I believe. They all come on a sprew, either blue or grey. Interesting thing is the riders and the horses look out of scale, could be my eyes but they don't look quite right.

Anyway, I want to start painting and doing a diorama. Do people first prime the blue and grey first? Does that help and if so, what color?. Then, what are the colors, typical because I know it varied so incredibly much, should I paint rebel and yank uniforms? I am looking at about 1863 colors, not too early when it was crazy and clearly not too late, 1865. Looking for some consistent colors if anyone can chime in. I normally build WWII aircraft in 1:48. I have been accumulating these for years. They are small and I actually forget the scale. Thanks for the help in advance.

I'm guessing these are IMEX or someother soft plastic kit. You porbably want to wash them in soap and water and prime them. You can use a primer of your choice, I use testors dullcoat out of a spray can on my figs ( though i havent done any of the ACW figs you have in years). As far as colors go, your best bet it to either check out some books at the library, buy some, or search reenactor sites on the web for color photos. The battle and which units you are building will detemine how you paint your figs.
My advice would be to mix up the shades of colors you use a little on each figure (or group of figs) so you don't end up with a monotone looking army.
