how to wash w/oil for female figures
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 17, 2004 2:38 PM
Hey,
I would like to have a soft look using oil paints.
I have done a base coat with Tamiya flesh.
Whats next with oil paints for a good female wash/ highlight?
I went to the store and got:
Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Raw Sienna, Titanium White, and Ivory Black.
I plan on doing washs with other models as well. (a VF-1S for you Macross fans)
Is this a good start or do I need other colors?
Maybe a yellow?

I'd go over the entire figure in a blend of T. White and B. Sienna using a lighter than normal blend, but not as a wash. Tamiya flesh does not produce a natural looking figure. You might add a small amount of Alizarin Crimson to the base for cheeks to give a slight blush and a bit more A. Crimson in the blend for her lips. Use slightly darker blends of T. White and B. Sienna for shadows and lighter blends for highlights.

If you're going to be getting into figures, you'll want to move away from Tamiya paints. I know of no successful painter who uses these paints for figures, either for final coats or base coats. If you prefer acrylics, find Vallejo or Andrea. You may have to shop on;ine for these. Both www.sentinelminiatures.com and www.milminwh.com have these.

Check out this site; 100% figures, MASSIVE photo gallery and great how-to info. FYI - many pics are rated 'R' (esp. in the 'Girls' genre) so make sure the rugrats are in the next room. Evil [}:)] Big Smile [:D]

Well,
What is the ideal paint for figures?
Can you airbush oil?

I guess you could airbrush oil, but the figures guys I know all use high quality brushes unless they are doing figures above 1/4 scale. The detail work, highllighting and shading that is the figure painter's art are not generally translatable to the use of an airbrush.
That said, the two most common media for figure painters are artists' oils, the stuff in tubes at the arts and craft stores and the Vallejo/Andrea lines of acrylic paints that come in the eyedropper bottles. Tamiya paint is not used since it can't be brushed on any more. I could go into a litany of complaints abotu this stuff, but suffice it to say, it's not the figure painter's friend.
