120mm Vietnam Diorama
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, October 19, 2004 12:36 PM
Hello,

I was up in Maryland last weekend for my first convention - the Region 2 CAPCON. Got some cool stuff for cheap, one of which was Verlinden's 120mm "Ranger Vietnam" resin figure for 10 bucks or so. I was wondering if I could use the figure (he's got his right arm raised up" with DML's 120mm Vietnam SEAL figure in some sort of diorama. Also, this is a multitude of firsts for me. First figure, first resin kit. Any suggestions or ideas would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Matt

EDIT:

Just supposing that I was able to get some smaller "VC" figures (1/35 scale) and use them to add depth to this... is there a way to figure out how far they should be to show depth? Once again, just wondering..

Matt,

A good formula for reference is taken from Shep Paine's book on dioramas.
That being that the aprox. distance you can focus your eye on a figure is about 5". At that distance a 1/35 scale figure appears the same size as a man about 20' away. A 120mm or 1/16 would be about 9'.

Forced perspective can be a pretty cool effect for dioramas, but you have to control the angle and direction the viewer looks. A slight change in angle and the effect is ruined if the eye can get a relative sense of scale and depth of field.

Good luck with your project.

Mike,

Thanks for the tips. I planned on putting the 120mm figs (3 of them now) behind some sort of structure (ruined temple wall) with openings to force the perspective, and have the VC boats (1/35 scale) at the rear of the diorama. I have an old "The Art Of The Diorama" book done by FSM in the late 80s I dug out of my old books box. I'll try to draw it up and post it.
