Resin & Vinyl figure kit building Guides.
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, November 1, 2004 6:58 PM
I was recently asked to make 2 guides on how to build Resin and Vinyl Kits.
These will be done over the next few months and I think I will use a Resin figure and a Vinyl Robot(ED-209, Madcat, etc) for the builds.

If anybody would like to keep up with the builds (resin first, vinyl next) let me know and I will post pics and descriptions of what is happening either here or on a web-site.
Both Guides will cover everything from taking the kit out of the box up to mounting it on a base.

It might also be fun to build a kit alongside as the guide progresses, but that is up to you guys.

Let me know if anyone is interested. Haven't quiet made up my mind which kits to pull out of the stash to build, most likel they will be japanese kits as I got very few western made kits using those materials.

I will be starting on the Resin guide this coming weekend, the kit I will be using will be choosen tonight.

Most likely going to be a 1/6 scale kit as the bigger size makes for better photographs.

Ok, the Kit has been decided on, it will be the following item:

1/5 Kaiyodo Yuri Cube from "Galaxy Fraulein Yuna" sculpted by BOME.

FYI, still looking for the matching Yuna and the 1/8 Ziina Kit.

Ooops nearly forgot here is a pic of the kit in question(photo supplied with the kit for color reference purpose):

Still undecided on the Vinyl Kit, either will be the 1/35 Madcat from Horizon, Kanchi from FLCL(Kaiyodo) or the Fatima Sizz(shizu) from FSS(Wave kit methinks).

I just have a small Q for ya :p

What kind of glue do you recamend for a vinyl kit? I'm haveing a hard time getting ol Kothoga's arm to stay on......... (Dunno if that's the glues fault, or Revell's fault )

I normally use 2-part epoxy for Vinyl Kits(2 min setting time).

Super-glue/CA will also work, but I fill it tries too hard/solid which does not go well, IMO, with the softer vinyl unless you filled your kit with resin or similar material.

Never done a Revell/Monogram Vinyl kit so I can't comment on the quality of the kit, but 2-part epoxy should work. Most vinyl kits can be slotted together and the parts should "stay" on minus glue.

Let me know if this helps, if not there are a few other things I can recommend.

Amazing Figure Modelers Issue #12 has a write-up about the kit.

From what I can gather online from those who build the kit is a challenge item.

The 1/60 Madcat, Vulture & Atlas are still available from Armorcast(link below).

Those are some great Resin & White Metal Kits, as for the Horizon Kit those are very rare now.

Here is a link for Armorcast:
http://www.armorcast.com/

Look under "Battletech Models".

Actually I will be ordering another Vulture from them on Monday as I need a 2nd one for an upcoming Dio involving a Madcat & 2 Vultures(1 damaged and collapsed)

We can get the Armour cast figures here as well. About AU$250 each I beleive. Lori has been indicating she might get me one as a wedding anniversary present. The Atlas is calling me currently, but the Madcat would be nice as well!

cheers and thanks for the link

No problem.

The only thing that kept me from building the Horizon Madcat is it's size, it is BIIIG. Tongue [:P]

The Armorcast version is quiet a bit smaller, more detailed and goes together way easier, plus I like the addition of the white metal parts.
One problem though with the armorcast kits they come sans decals, so I had to reduce the Horizon ones and print a new set in 1/60 scale.

Fighting Piranha make decals for the Ral Patha and Iron Wind Metals miniature battletech 'mechs, there are big enough House or Clan markings that would work

cheers
