Figure newbie

Well, sort of a figure. I'm actually an aircraft guy but, for the first time in my adult modeling, I'm building a model that has a crew that is worthy to use. I don't know many techniques to painting these. I've been working on the face and I've finally settled with a technique for that. Now I'd like to find some information on how to paint the figures uniforms (leather, thick coats, etc). Any websites or info I can get to that can get me started pretty quick?

Thanks!!

The only ones that I am aware of deal with large scale figures and I doubt that 4 coats of paint will look well in that scale.
