Practice, practice, practice. And good, fine brushes.
For modern 3-color desert camo, I use a base coat of Testors MM sand, next do larger, irregular areas of a khaki green color (I mix my own), closest is Testors MM SAC Bomber Tan. Lastly smaller squiggles of MM military brown.
For woodland camo, simmilar process. Base of MM medium green, larger areas of military brown, squiggles of khaki green, squiggles of black.
For faces, find a good skintone you like (again ,I mix my own), paint whole face first. For eyes, I use a cross method. With a fine (000) brush, first paint the whites across the eyes horizontally. Next, paint the color to the eyes, I use brown or blue. Do this by crossing the white vertically with a thin line. Make sure the lines on both eyes are in the same place, otherwise, the eyes will be looking in different directions and will look wierd. Lastly, fill in the areas where the white and brown have gone out of the eye socket and complete the shape of the eyes. Put fine eye brows and paint in the hair.
That is it.
Here is a link to a site with lots of figure ainting tips as well. Figures at Armorama.com
