I'm not going to write your paper for you, but here are some ideas. A Private is the lowest rank when entering military service. Depending on the branch of service, Infantry, Artillery, Engineers, Armor, etc. they do different things related to their branch. But you basically have it right, they do all the grunt work out on the front lines and get things done.

Duckman;

First Private first class is an American rank. The Canadian Army follows the British rank structure. Privates had no insignia or chevron. A Lance Corporal is probably what you uniform had which is one chevron or "stripe" or "hook" in a shallow V style of material with one more added as you went to Corporal, Sargeant and so on.
Check the Veteran's Affairs website for more information. As well pass on to your teacher that 2005 is the Year of the Veteran in Canada. It might get you some extra credit for knowing that. If you need any further help you can email me.

Cheers;

Gregory
