The Colour is called Field Gray, or Feldgrau, and is really a greyish green. Tamya field grey is fairly close, but a little grey and a littel light, Humbrol slate grey is just about spot on.

The colours changed during the course of the war, as the quality of the uniforms decreased. In 1939 - 41 the uniforms were very well made of hi quality wool, but towards the later half of the war the germans inroduced increasingly larger quantities of synthetic viscous rayon which was not so hard wearing.

A general rule of thumb is to paint early war uniforms greener, and late war uniforms more grey, but of course there are always many exceptions to this.

To complicate matters further, it was pretty common for officers to have their uniforms made up by a private tailor, so this introduced even more variations.

Hi there! hey please, i hope someone over here may help me.. i just bought a resin figure of a 1/35 Wermacht soldier, the thing here is that i dont know the colors that i should use to paint this soldier and also i´m a little mixed up because a friend of mine told me that i should use Field Gray 2 (H48 gunze sangyo) or a dark gray that i dont remember the code, he told me that once the german soldiers were in the city they changed uniform and used the darker colors, but.... is this true???... As you can see i dont know anything about German Soldiers neither the Whermacht so please help me guys..

Thanks a lot

Hector,

Go to this website:
http://www.atthefront.com/g_frames.htm

These are re-enactors that currently use uniforms of the German Army, and SS. They use original patterns and in some cases original materials. The pictures on the site will help you to visualy match the colors. I think you will find that the colors varied quite a bit. Their research information is pretty accurate.

M1who manufactures the top pic of german soldiers? Did you paint those? They look pretty awsome!

Humbrol slate grey is spot on for Feldgrau, if you use Humbrol no 30 dark green with it for shading you will get the correct look.

Hi,

I would suggest you to read this link about the color of the German uniform. Since I made some research on this subject, I find it a very difficult subject. In fact, there are a lot of variance in the colors for different reason.

Good reading.

Testors make a acrylic paint for the German Uniform color. It is called German Uniform Feldgrau, stock # 4614 (FG02014). I hope this helps.
