Bathing metal figures
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, June 8, 2005 3:37 AM
In case you thought this was a post about figures bathing you would be sadly mistaken.... [:-) ]

My question (and probably one asked and answered before) is about the washing of white metal figures.

I read somewhere that metal figures should be washed in a vinegar & water mixture before commencing with priming. Is there any sort of recommended ratio between the water & the vinegar? Should white or brown vinegar be used? Does using either one make any difference? Are there any precautions that should be taken?

All you need to do is remove any oil residue from the casting process. I scrub them with an old tooth brush using mineral spirits & then a good rinse in warm water. Vinegar may work also, but I've never used it.

I just soak them in hot tap water and dishwashing detergent for 5 +/- minutes much like I do to other media figures and parts. Air dry for at least over night and careful not to touch them with bare skin afterwards. That has worked a-ok for me.

Thanks for the feedback. The general consensus appears to be either don't bother washing, or wash as per normal.

Cheers Smile [:)]

The important thing is to do a wash to remove the mold release agent or any oils or greases from handling etc. Any detergent will do. I usually use a dish deterfent and then use the comrpessoe to blow off excess water and to dry.

btw, love the sig tag. Isn't that from a description of an oath by the hospitallers?

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the input.

Re. the sig line... it's quote from Osprey's Knight Templar book. I'm not sure if it was an official line from The Rule, but I thought it's a nice addage to apply to life... Smile [:)]
