Hey Renarts-Verliden has the "centurion" but I feel it's rather stiff. The "Black Prince" looks fun tho. Andrea miniatures makes some great ancients, but I don't like metal-even your finger oil can remove paint.

I was pretty put off by the sticker, so I just painted the design on. I made a template from some mylar and used it as a means to trace an outline on the base coated shield. Once that was done I flipped it so they would be symmetrical and then first painted a block of color, then detailed it with a fine brush.

My advice.... toss the sticker or use South Aussies method.

The though of using a template did not even cross my mind, but now that you mentioned it, sounds like a good idea, will try it next time I am in a similar situation.

Lovely work. I must say, I have always liked the military look of the Roman Legionnary.

Cheers

Hey Renarts, I think I'll try your method-the painted on look will be more realistic. Besides I'm supposed to be a commercial "artist"-better live up to my title. ;-)

Dan, I tried everything to get it to fit, the main problem was the outer edge of the sticker refusing to line up with the edge of the sheild, if you decide to go the way I went you will need a very sharp knife blade to cut the patterns out clean.

Excellent work Renarts

Im not quite sure if the one I did a few years ago is the same as yours but it looks like it. If it is the same kit how did you go at fitting the stick on pattern for the sheild, couldn't get my to fit no matter what I tried, ended up cutting the patterns out of the main sheet and then applying then as separate items. I have attached a photo showing the shield. Be interested in your feedback.

Thanks for the armour treatment tip. I have a bottle of Alcad II in steel, and I was thinking of trying that. I guess it's time for an experiment or two. I'll be sure to post the results.

Ha! I've got some constructive critisism for you!

Why not post larger photos so we can see the detail even better? Smile [:)]

That figure looks awesome, and thanks for describing how you painted the armor.

Beautiful job, Renarts. I've got the Verlinden 120mm legionaire, and after seeing yours I can't wait to start. I think I'll download your images for "inspiration".

Thanks for the nice comments guys. I appreciate you taking the time to look and comment.

While I am a big fan of vallejo acrylics, my favorite for doing any type of plate armor is a base coat of Model Master chrome silver. Once this dries and cures I give it a wash of black followed by a coat of tamiya smoke. Once dry, I go over it with crushed graphite from a pencil and then a final dry brush of chrome silver again.

Wonderful work! I have this very figure (or parts of this figure) lying in several boxes in my studio. It's very nice to see someone finish this old classic with some flare.

What did you use for the armour? I'm working on a 120mm Landsknecht soldier form Pilpili, and have been hesitating where the armour is concerned.

Painted with Vallejo acrylics.

As always, constructive criticisms good or bad welcome.
