Need advice on Vallejo
Posted by Dsotm on Monday, June 27, 2005 6:24 AM
I need to paint several german tank mechanics in overalls. Never having done figures before, I have read the forum and decided to go with Vallejo. The help I need is I do not know which colours in this range I need to paint the figures (they will be in dark overalls). Could anyone give me a list? Extra colours on a just-case-basis would also be welcome

Thanks
Brian

Many thanks - thats a briiliant link - have bookmarked it. That takes care of the field grey shirts - Do you know which would be the base, highlight and shadow for the overalls? I cannot seem to find a uniform reference pic and am going by what I see on the Tamiya box - sort of a green colour

Brian the green color is a shade of field grey stlye of uniform, the German field grey uniforms ranged from a grey to green grey depending on who, when and the manufacturer of the uniform, the overalls would be made from a material similar in color to the uniforms. Tamyia's field grey paint has a greenish shade and this may be why they look green on the Tamyia box art.

I use vallejo 830 (German Field Grey) as a base and highlight with 886 (Green Grey). Use a little more highlight to help the coveralls stand out from the rest of the uniform.

Thanks for the help - I'll order them today - do I need a shadow colour for this set?

Don't worry - saw your answer in the other thread :)

What colours would you recommend for faces?

Brian,
For shadow effects on the field grey a mixture of 830 Field Grey and 862 Black grey or you can use 979 dark green.

Painting faces can be trial and error, the best way I have found is to experiment untill you have the desired effect but basically these are the colors I use.
The base color I use is 804 Beige Red,
for the initial shadows, a mixture of 40% 941 Burnt Umber and 60% 804Beige Red,
light shadows ie around cheeks and cheekbones, etc, a mixture of 804 Beige Red, 981 Orange brown and Cavalry brown, about 1/3 each.
for medium shadows mixture of 60% 941 Burnt Umber and 40% 804Beige Red,
for dark shadows 941 Burnt Umber
Highlights 804 Beige Red and 955 Flat Flesh
High Highlights 955 Flat Flesh

It pays to experiment with these color to obtain the effects you are after. I usually work in 120mm scale, for 1/35 scale the effects could be slightly different. One word of advise do not use straight white for the eyes, tone it down a bit with blue or yellow.

Hope this helps.
