Thanks everyone. Had the computer in for a tune up, and haven't checked in for a while, but I'm happy you all enjoyed this. I'll be sure to post Sitting Bull when I get him done, whenever that may be.

Oh! That kind of bust. :-( Very nice job-George still has his scalp.

Great work! Excellent painting.

Actually, here's something you might think about. Custer's complextion was not very clear. He was a strawberry blonde and had taut, freckly skin. If you hadn't already painted it up so nicely, I'd suggest figuring that in.

Busts are fun 'quickies'. I always enjoy them.

Thanks Al, you're right on the uniform observation. I believe this bust was based on a portrait taken of Custer earlier in his career. I'm not sure when it was taken, but it could have been in the early part of the civil war. His rank insignia molded onto the shoulder boards indicate he is only a major, so that would explain the more "conventional" threads.

Very nice piece of work. No technical issues that I can see. Historically, as I've come to understand, GAC had custom made "uniforms" which were non standard and may even have been black with confederate style "chicken guts" on the sleeves. But no reason to think he didn't wear more coomonplace blue from time to time.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

My First Bust

I just finished this first attempt at a bust and thought I would share it. This is Spartan Miniatures Col. George A. Custer in 1/9 scale. It's a resin bust, and came in one piece, except for the tassles and cord, which I made from Magic Sculp putty. I painted in my usual fashion with Humbrol enamels and artists oils. I found this was a lot of fun to do, and I managed to finish him off in about three days (at about 2-3 hours a day), so it was a quick build. I regret that I waited this long to try a bust. Next up is a bust of Sitting Bull in 1/8 scale from Pilipili. Cheers everyone.
