Equipment straps
Posted by grizz30_06 on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 1:39 PM
On a DML 1/35 Nam figure I decided to use part of a photo-etch fret to make a strap for a grenade launcher. I added some buckles from wire and I think it looks pretty good. Is lead foil better than this? I ask because I don't drink and don't really feel like spending much more money on some lead foil. I have also used aluminum foil, it seems OK but a little thin. Has anyone else tried this.

Lead foil lays more realistically because it is soft and can be easily molded to the folds of the figure it is over, or bent/folded to drape realistically. I like it better than aluminum foil and especially better than PE fret, which is way too stiff.

Well I guess it's to the ABC store (sigh). No, maybe I should just bite the bullet and buy some. Any suggestions?

Grizz;

I source my wine bottle foil from the local LCBO (Liqour Store) by placing a small flyer asking for buyers to save the foil from the bottle and drop it off to a friend at the store.

If you can not do this. Check your local Yellow Pages for "Brew/Bottle it yourself" locations. You may be able to by sheets of foil without having to consume the contents.

I hope this helps save some money for you.

Cheers;

Great Models sells lead foil. Just go to the site ( www.greatmodels.com ) and do a search for lead foil. Cost is from $3.00 to $6.25.
Thanks for posting this topic, I'm currently in the middle of scratch building vests for a set of figures. I'd been using aluminium foil but having to layer it to get the correct thickness. I'd never thought about lead foil until I'd read this post.
