Digital cam?
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, October 29, 2005 3:58 AM
Has anyone out ther figured out an effective way to paint the new digital cam patterns that are starting to appear on the world's battlefields? Iwould like to do some Marines in Iraq wearing desert MARPAT or Canadian troops in Afghanistan with Arid region CADPAT.

CADER28:

MARPAT and CADPAT Arid are like any other pattern to be depicted. Know the scale and what is visible at the "scale distance"

The easiest way I have found to paint these types of patterns is to decide which is the main colour and start with that and move to the lesser used. Steady hand, fine brush and a ready reference on the bench (a swatch of the material works for me)

Earlier in the Figure forum there was a post on painting a Op Iraqi Freedom 1/16 scale figure from Tamiya. Take a look at that as well.

Try a light dabbing motion with a very small brush to get the splotches. I'd use a 5/0 brush or smaller, preferably a 10/0. gburdon layed out a solid way of approaching the pattern, so I won't elaborate other than the above suggestion.

Here's a quick attempt in 1/35th scale, done exactly as gburdon explained, with the brown color being the dominant, base color and the others being layed on in order of frequency.

EXACTLY! That is spot on! My Camera is not working for some stupid reason so I can't post any pic's. You did exactly the same as I did (although you did MAR PAT) CADPAT is slightly different.

Thanks for the pic.

Thanks.

Yeah, I did the MARPAT. You can certainly get away with a little less accuracy in 1/35th scale, as far as the intracacies of the individual splotches.

That's definitely the best way to do camo. There is always a base color which the others are layered onto.

Here's an example of tiger stripe I did in 1/9th scale about six years ago. It illustrates another use of the technique. The tan is the base color and the green and black splotches were worked together, leaving a thin line of the base to separate the other colors.

That is a great looking figure! Who manufactures that one? I am working on a Ranger figure (assembled not primed yet) concurrent to some other figures on the bench.

Thanks. That's one of my originals. I sculpted it around 1998. A few minor anatomical issues, but it was my first large scale figure. Fun project.
