Scourge of Rome
Posted by ghamilt1 on Saturday, October 29, 2005 2:51 PM
Good Day. I've just about finished the final touches on this Pegaso 75mm Marcomanni Warrior, and need to add a little bit of groundwork detail. I'm saving that for after I finish reading the Osprey "Landscape Modeling" Book I got for my birthday. So in the mean time, here he is. Sorry if the pictures are a little blurry, but I hope that won't stop you from offering your comments. Cheers everyone.

Glenn-very nice, although I've never heard of Marcomanni Warriors-were they Gauls or Celtics? As far as ground work don't forget to check out your spice cabinet or back yard. Oregano makes for great leaves at this scale!

Thanks! Marcomanni were one of the Germanic tribes which inhabited the region around the Danube. Initially they were Rome's enemies, but like so many other barbarian tribes, the Marcomanni were "hired" by Rome to patrol the border of the empire against further invasion by other tribes. This would have during the mid-Fourth to mid-Fifth century A.D.

Good call on the Oregano! I was planning on doing something to represent an autumn scene.

Very nice Glenn. The painting came out super. Looking at the figure really makes me want to try to do one myself. Thanks for sharing.

The weathering and dirt on the coat looks true to life!
I think his arms are a little plae though. Maybe a very thin wash of brown would add some dirt.

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate your feedback. I thought the arms looked a little pale myself, which is especially apparent in the photo. I think it's a trick of the camera ( I used natural light) as I went back and the arms do look a little darker in real life compared to the pictures. Oh well, I can only afford one hobby, and I do prefer figure painting over photography. But thanks for pointing it out. Feedback like that can only serve to improve my painting skills. Cheers!
