The Russian tank crews started wearing black leather jackets late in WW II, probably after capturing German tankers. The German tankers (primarily the SS crews) started wearing U-Boat leather jackets around 1944. The Russians were always good at taking an idea and running with it. So yes, painting a modern Russian tanker with a black jacket is appropriate, for as far as I know they still use them. Those leather helmets are still dark brown, though... no points for matching the outfit, I guess. I believe the cloth uniform is still dark green or khaki drab, so the figure would have green pants with the black jacket.

Painting a Russian figure...
Posted by Zero Enna on Thursday, November 10, 2005 9:40 PM
I've purchased the Dragon 1/35 T-72M2, as you know, that kit comes with one figure, but it seems more like a monkey than a man... well, with a little patience I made it look more like a man, so I want to paint it, but I don't know how to... I the instruction sheet says that I must paint the uniform black... is that correct?... I don't know anything about modern Russian uniforms... Any help would be appreciated... Thanks in advance.
