Looking for links
Posted by Wolfp on Sunday, December 11, 2005 8:51 AM

Hello folks,

    I am looking for some good links to waffen ss uniforms.  In particular I am looking for uniforms of the Kursk time frame, placement of insignia, and types of insignia.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Chao

Try this for starts;

This isn't a topic that can be answered in a few paragraphs. I can recommend a few books if you are interested.

Thanks for the link.  Yes, I have my eye on a few, problem is coming up with the cash to make the purchase.  Figured I would try the internet first before plunking down more buckshish and having the wife give me the hairy eyeball.  Thanks again.

I would suggest the Squadron/Signal title on the Waffen SS, and perhaps Osprey's book as well. Squadron's book has lots of pictures and a centerfold with well detailed color plates, while Osprey's has lots of text with explanations of the rank insignia system, with corresponding pictures, and several color plates as well. Squadron's book titled SS Aromr: A Pictorial History of the Armored Formations of the Waffen-SS has lots of great pics of not just the tanks, but of the men, and there are a few pages with great color plates of men in interesting uniform combos. All of these books can be had for comparitively cheap, as oppossed to those beautiful coffee table books on the subject. They're all around $10-$12 and could be found used as well, for under $10.

In fact, here you go.

If you search the Osprey site for Waffen SS, you'll find all of their titles on the subject. The one I mentioned will probably suffice, but some of the others might be more specifically suited to your project. You can find all of these titles at Amazon too, possibly for less. I see that there are only used copies of SS Armor: A Pictorial History of the Armored Formations of the Waffen-SS at Amazon, but they are all under $10.

Oh, and you might find this site of some use. http://www.1944militaria.com/waffen_ss_camouflage.htm

Thanks again...the militaria site has some excellent close ups of the camo smocks.  Appreciate the help.  Chao.
