Saving Private Ryan figures?
Posted by echolmberg on Friday, February 17, 2006 1:29 PM

Hello all,

I was watching Saving Pvt. Ryan the other night and wondered if there are any kit figures out there based on this movie.  Does anyone know?

Thank you,

Eric

Never seen any plastic 1/35 released.  Unless they come in resin, then I don't know.  I think I have had a glimpse of a 120mm one some where.  Tamiya has a nice 1/35 army assault figure set which with some conversion you can do a good scene from SPR.

This 200mm bust from Unite Empire Minuiatures looks a lot like Tom Hanks. Do a search for "Rnager" at http://www.redlancers.com There are seveal Point du Hoc rangers there.

I know that Dragon did some figures for wind talkers but I don't know about Prv. Ryan.  You could use the dragon 101 paratroopers and rangers to make your own.

Thank you for all the great info!  I like that one of Hanks.  Many of the scenes in the movie look like they'd be perfect for a diorama using either resin or white metal figures.  I wish I were skilled enough where I could make my own but, alas, such is not the case.  I'm going to check out the Tamiya figures as well to see what all can be used to recreate a scene from this great movie.

On a side note, this has always been something on my "wish list".  I think it would be neat if the figure manufacturers could create small vignets depicting a particular scene from the movies.  Just a small wish of mine.  I picked up the metal figures of Butch and Sundance which can be locked together to recreate the famous last scene from "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid".  I hope they come out with more types like these.

Thanks to all for the info!

Eric;

Dragon/DML released a set of Rangers (Normandy 1944) and 101st Airborne (Normandy 1944)around the time Saving Private Ryan was released in theatres. Both kits are earlier releases (before they stepped up the sculpting detail) the quality is still quite good for the price. The new release of 29th Infantry Normandy figures is a much better release that is much more detailed and some parts could be used to generate different poses.

I have one of the older issues of Military Miniatures Magazine that had a detailed build of the bridge/Alamo scene from S.P.R depicting Capt.Miller firing his Colt. It is a really great diorama.

I hope this helps.

Cheers;

Gregory

The problem is licensing. The studio or other copyright holder owns the rights to everything you see on screen  If a company wants to try to make money off that scene, it must first pay for that right. Andrea sneaks around this regularly by renaming famous movie characters on the box top. I've beentold they periodically have to pony up money for this, but by then we painters have gotten some cool stuff. Check out their website at http://www.andrea-miniatures.com/eng/Index.htm

This is actually the second interpretation of this scene. Cromwell had a resin Butch and Sundance available some years ago. Much softer detail than Andrea, however.

Artists hold the rights to the images in their painting in a similar way. Warriors got in a heap of trouble for doing some vingettes based on paintings by military artist Don Troiani. He sued for compensation for money lost from the licensing rights he felt should have been aquired before Warriors made the models. He had no problem with the models themselves, but took a hard line with Warriors and won. The models were discontinued.

Boy.  I always forget about the whole licensing thing.  That's really too bad.  It's a shame.  Think of the extra money which could be generated if they just all worked together.  Maybe everyone could benefit.  The person or organization who holds the rights would be compensated, the figure manufacturers would get more exposure and sell more products and we, the figure fans, would get some neat products.

I'd really like to take a look at that bridge scene in Military Miniature Magazine.  Gregory, would you happen to have an issue number I could reference?

Thank you to all!

I was thinking of doing the scene with the airborne troopers swarming over the tiger ( before the 20MM opened up that is) or the part where Ryan and Miller were pitching mortar rounds at the germans

I've always wanted to do the scene where  Miller is on the Kennkrad w/ the pistol shooting at the Tiger.

Eric;

As already mentioned the issue is #24 of Military Miniatures in Review. Here's a link to the artist who created the diorama and his work.

Eric et al,

Nemrod produces some really nice 1/35 scale resin figures that are airborne, pathfinder and beach landing subjects that are perfect for this application.

Ref: Redlancer or Squadron for availability. I'm pretty sure both firms carry them.

I think it was Mirage that do (or did) a 200mm D day Ranger that looks some what like Tom Hanks.
