Emperor Palpatine - WIP- Thoughts?
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, February 17, 2006 10:18 PM
Hi, After moving i finally am back in to working on models again. This model is of the emperor from star wars. Its the shadows of the empire kit, dont know the scale but its about a foot tall.

Here is what i have done so far as you can see. One thing that is kind of bad about the kit is the feet fit into a special part that fits into the base but it took along time to cut off the trim from the parts like the base. I am trying to make it look like the movie version from return of the jedi. As far as shading goes the only thing i have done so far is dry brush some white along the edges of his clothes to bring out the lines. And the face has 3 colors of brown/ skin on it with heavy coat of black wash.

How is my progress and any tips/ thoughts would be great !!! This is a big scale for a figure so i want some great details to come out.

Looks good, its a vinyl kit if I remember right, I have several Geometrics vinyls and they are superbly rendered (well, WORF has a tiny butt and Troi, well what IS she doing with that hand back there??). Fill legs with BBs so it wants to stand on its own.
From the last movie Palpatines's face looked REALLY pale, but I think it changes a bit with time, perhaps not.  Perhaps a deep blue wash to bring out the depth of the face without losing it to black with really washes a face out. Hobbyfanatics.com message board is full of tips on working with these odd skin tones and I have been experimenting on them a lot lately. Reaper has a line of paints made for wargaming but I find them perfect on all my figures now (Similar to Vallejo and out of Texas), in grades for various fleshtones (light, mid and dark skin).

Love the figure, but I havent seen this one around lately, where did you find yours?

Wow! Good job so far. Didn't the Emperor have a slight greenish or blueish cast to his skin? (in R.O.T.J.) He was definately more pale. Unless that is for pre-shading and I just missed it. That happens. Keep us posted!

Great work so far. As said, doesn't the emperor have a more pale complexion with some bluish tint to his skin? I'd just keep layering on the washes and drybrushes on his face to get a greater tone variation.

Looking good so far Mage, but as others have commented, the skin tone doesn't yet capture the movie portrayal.

Mage,
I'm not sure. The black or dark brown wash looks a little too dark/harsh. Have you considered using pastels in the folds to soften the look? Maybe some soft red/purple to distress around the eys. Photos of Palpatine are around, I would suggest really looking over photos to find the subtleties of his face to bring life to it. Try a Google image search. Just a suggestion. Good luck.
