Looking for WW 1 American Soldiers in 1/16 scale
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, May 4, 2006 12:41 PM

Hello,

I'm getting back into the hobby after a very long absence and the first thing I am building is an old Palmer's 75mm WW 1 Artillery Piece. They claim it's scaled from US Army Photo's but they must have been looking at the wrong pictures, it is very out of scale, etc. Well anyways, it doesn't have a scale printed anywhere on the box or directions so after some camparison measurements I think it's approx. 1/16 scale. So my question is does anyone know if someone makes either a WW 1 American Soldier or an early WW 2 American Solder with the doughboy style helmet that I could convert to WW 1. I haven't modified any figures, etc so the closer they are to what I need the better. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks...
Matt

There are a number of kits available. I know Verlinden has one or two, maybe more. I think Michael Roberts LTD has a few as well. Jaguar might also have one or two. Mostly US Marines at Belleau Wood. There are also a number of Brit figures available in that scale, but they'd require a little modification.

I'd verify the scale of the weapon first though. Do you know, or can you aquire the basic, overall dimensions of the real artillery piece? Like length, width and height? If you can, multiply those dimensions by .0625 (the scale multiplier for 1/16th scale, which is aquired by dividing 1 by 16) and see if the result measures up to the model. For example, if the real length is 180" (15'), 180 x .0625 = 11.25, or 11 1/4 inches. See if the length of the model adds up to that, and if it does, then that's the right scale. If not, you may need to try a different multiplier (like say 1 divided by 15, or 1
divided by 17), depending on how far off, and whether it's off on the big side or the small side. Hopefully, it's within reasonable range of an actual, popular scale.

Thanks PlyMonkey...  The Verlinden BAR gunner looks like it would work.  As for an actual size piece, I have no idea what the measurements are.  The nearest thing I could come up with is that there are some restored 75mm Field Gun photo's on google and one of them has some re-enactors standing near them.  I figured the guy was about 6' tall and the wheel came up only so far, so I guessed at it being about a 4' wheel and then did the math.  Comes out to something like 1/15.7 scale so the 120mm figure would work well enough, he would just be a little taller than the average WW 1 soldier.  Thanks for your help...

If you wanted to go a bit smaller to 80mm (1/24) Fusilier would give you your greatest selection of US, Commonwealth, German and French.

Check out Michigan Toy Soldier and Red Lancer for their stock and availability.

Nemrod has a 120 WWl doughboy. He is wearing the style helmet you want and is armed with a combat shotgun and bayonet while advancing. HTH,Rgds Jim

Don't know about U.S. WWI figures, but Jaguar makes a very nice British figure with a bandaged head, holding up his perforated helmet with a big grin on his face.

You might also want to check out some offerings by Model Cellar Productions.  I am not sure if they are still in production, but I see them at shows, and they have some WWI figures, but I am not sure if the make exactly what you are looking for.Pirate [oX)]
