I highly recommend Opsrey's elite Yugoslav war I: Croatia and Slovenia. It includes several plates and photos of the various Serbian units with the camo patterns.Vol II is due out for Christmas and covers Bosnia.

My friend was an Infantry platoon leader (with 10th Mt. Div) and he was ambushed by unknown forces during his stay in Kosovo.  They exchange gunfight for about 3 minutes and they just disapeared.  He was telling me that it was not uncommon to get ambushed. 

Tankluver, I'm not sure, at this point I'm really basing this more or less around the BTR-80, which was used by Russians in the NATO force (correct?) Im not sure though- did any of the other forces use the BTR-80? I was going to have them rolling up into a possible ambush, but now Im not really sure who would be fighting the NATO forces in Bosnia, or Kosovo. I was thinking of having a small Serb mercinary/regular army style group ambushing the BTR. November, thanks for the merc picture, thats gotta be a reaal long shot from the 20th floor, espesally when hes more or less leved off like that, but the outfit is very civilian. hope your office has calmed down a bit since

In reference to the authenticity of the snipers clothes in the movies,as per the Gene Hackman vehicle (the name escapes me at present) I found the following pic on Corbis with the caption:

Are you going to make the ambush in the begining of the war or towards the end. I remember that one of the armies i think the Croations didnt now how to use amor in a suffiencient way and they were almost about to  be destroyed and then some mercinaries came in and should them how to use tanks and artillery.

It's really odd; I work with ALOT of Serbs and Croats, and a few guys from Kosovo, and the Serbs and Croats wont even talk to the Kosovonians (?). They consider them to be the reason the country fell apart. They dislike Muslims a great deal and make no effort to hide their distatse. I remember right after 9/11 a guy who worked for us who was Nation of Islam was talking about how the U.S. deserved this, etc,etc, and this big Serbian guy named Timko (I'm 6'3 & 278 lbs and the guy is bigger than me) walked up to him and said : "in my country, we take Mooslim (makes gesture of gun to head), BOOM! Good bye......." Yeah, it was a very awkward moment for everyone there.

Tankluver and Avus, thank for reminding me about that, I have that one sittin on my shelf and never really put two and two together. Would the mixed in mercinaries really be wearing a mix of civilian clothes and tac. gear? I remember the guy in Behind Enemy Lines had a joging suit or something on. Wasnt sure about the realism though. November Song, welcome to the forum and thanks a lot for all the links and the other movie references, I'll hafta check those out before I decide on anything permanent. I realise this was a painfully recent civil war/agression (depending on which side you listen to by the sound of it) conflict involving genocide and street fighting, so I'm really trying to do my recerch and try and figure out how to make it as realistic as I can and do the people justice. I havnt been taught anything about this war in school, so any background information would be helpful.

Try: "Shot Through the Heart "; its the story of two best friends who become snipers on opposing sides of the war. I saw this only once, and it was really, really good.There is another movie out called "No Mans land"(2001) that got 4&1/2 stars out of 5 from Amazon that looks pretty good too. And of course, there is always "Welcome to Sarajevo ". for research into your project too.

If you google "Serbian Croat war Photos" a bunch of stuff comes up, I'd try to google it under images as well, only type in "Croatian soldiers" and then "Serbian soldiers". Alot of stuff comes up then. It's all mixed up with pics from WWI, but there are definately photos from the Civil war in the 90's there.

 

Also, try Corbis http://pro.corbis.com/ they have a fantastic base of photos. You have to register (it's free) to view and print photos without there being a watermark on them, but it is worth the time. Just go to Corbis and type in "Battle of Stalingrad", and look at the quality of the pictures that comes back. TONS of WWII pics.

One thing: the soldiers on the Serbian side were almost all regular troops using mainly ex-soviet equipment, but among the separatists were a lot of mercenaries so they were dressed up in various ways using different kind of equipment.

You might try to look for soviet uniforms to find out how the Serbians looked like.

Fighting sadly took place in all kind of environment, so any pick is a go.
