Help with fine lines on uniforms
Posted by Wilbur Wright on Wednesday, August 16, 2006 12:03 PM
I have difficulty painting the fine lines on german uniform epilets and collars 1/35 Tamiya figures. You know the two silver bars on the collar (for instance). I use very fine artists brushes (red sable).

Should I use a pin perhaps? How do you figure painters do this??? Any tips?

Help appreciated.

Silver pencil or dry brushing method works well on raised details.  But if it is not raised details .......???????

Try Archer Fine Transfers at www.archertransfers.com . They make really nice 1/35 dry transfer uniform markings for German, U.S. and British. Heck, they have a dry transfer for just about anything, they even have eyeballs Thumbs Up [tup] ...just pick your scale.

Hi men, thanks,  the detail is not raised. I'm talking about very small detail. almost tricks the eyes when painting.
It usually takes me about ten times of wiping off with a q-tip before it comes out correct. Last night I got one side done right away and then 1/2 hour to get the other done. Maddening.

people who specialize in figure painting  must have a tip???????

In stead of painting hte lines, paint what's inside the lines.

E.g., the piping on certain panzer crews was pink. Paint the pink on the primer or base color then paint to the edge with the base color. Things like SS runes are best done with something like the products discussed in this thread: http://www.hfmodeling.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=SquawkBox&file=index&req=viewtopic&topic_id=82244&page=1

Ajlafleche,
Can I just send you my figures for you to paint? Big Smile [:D] Actually, I've been practicing painting on those 99 cent store special plastic army men figures.  I think I got the uniform down, but still having problem with skin tones.

By the way, ajlafleche,  are you a civil war re-enactor?

It depends on what kind of paint you use. I never managed to get reeeeeally thin lines with enamels but with acrylics it works fine.

ajlafleche's tip on the shoulder straps should work fine. I once did the unit strap on the sleeve in three passes black-white-black to get a black strip with two fine white lines (never really managed to write "Grossdeutschland" into that srip Laugh [(-D]).
For the collar you'll need a very thin and sharp brush (5-0) very thin color, but not to "watery", remove the excess with a cloth or paper from the brush and then draw the line.

The "Liezen" (or something like that) on the German uniform collar shouldn't be that difficult once you get the hang of it, but "SS" runes or ranks really are a pain ... better off with dry transfers, decals or PE parts.
