hi there, here's a method i use when i paint my 1/72 scale figures, i soak them in a container containing bleach, soap and water, it's really potent and smelly as it creates a gas, but it removes all the manufacturing oils, then after a couple of hours, you can do this and let them soak overnight, then rinse in hot water and let air dry, i've not had a problem at all with any of my figures holding paint, then i hit them with a clear-coat, either gloss or dull, hope this helps you out, it does me and i've painted well over a thousand from different eras, only 900,000 more to go.

Italeri has a few Roman sets in 1/72 and one in 1/32:

http://www.italeri.com/product.aspx?item=6021S (Infantry)
http://www.italeri.com/product.aspx?item=6028S (Cavalry)
http://www.italeri.com/product.aspx?item=6047S (Infantry 2)
http://www.italeri.com/product.aspx?item=6062S (Gladiators)
http://www.italeri.com/product.aspx?item=6857S (Infantry 1/32)

Anyhow paint on those kind of figures doesn't stay on because the plastic is very soft, so when, for some reaon or another, the figure is bent, the paint chips off.

A good thing to do is wash the figures with soap (the pastic they are made of is kind of greasy), prime them possibly with an enamel and then use whaever paints you like best to color them.

ESCI (now out of business) has line of 1/72 scale Roman soldiers and those were definitely paintable.  I have those figures somewhere in my basement and those were not that bad either.

Suggestions for Roman soldier figures

Hello all,

Was wondering if anyone know of a source for paintable (IE: the little plastic figs never seem to take paint) 1/32nd or 1/72nd Roman soldier figures?

I figured Hat or Airfix had sets in 1/72nd, but I never had any luck with them holding paint, plus they are on the small side.

Thanks for the advice!
