Help needed with a WH40K figure
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, September 10, 2006 7:59 AM
My son bought a WH40K figure, a Librarian or something.  These figures tend to be sculpted in a dynamic pose.  WH40K dudes usually have a 'backpack' of some sort and oversized armored shoulderpads.  This figure has his arm held high, as if calling his troups to charge.  The problem is that the shoulderpad (which is sculpted to the pewter figure) won't let the generic backpack (which is a plastic glue-on bit) to seat properly.

We're at a loss on how to proceed.  Either we remove part of the shoulder (ugh), part of the backpack (ugh) or we reseat the backpack to a different location.  I suppose, as I type this, we're expected to do just that.

There were no instructions, and GW surely knows that these parts don't go together.

I can probably post pics if it will help, I don't know if our camera zooms in close enough.

You don't need to zoom in to take close up shots. You need macro lens capabilities. If you have a fairly new digital camera, then you should have  a macro setting. Look for a small flower icon somewhere on your camera. On my camera, it's the lower part of the browse wheel (6 o'clock). On some cameras, there might be a macro setting you have to turn a setting knob to.

To use the macro feature, push the button with the flower icon, or turn the knob to the macro position, which should also bear the flower icon. You should have the lens pulled back all the way. If you zoom in, the pic will be blury. Depending on how old your camera is, and how many mega pixels it can shoot, in the macro setting, you should be able to move in as close as two inches to your subject, or even  closer and still get a clear shot.

As for the problem, you might try removing material from both the shoulder and the pack, to try and have them "meet in the middle". Remember that soft things yield to hard, so the pack will conform to the shape of any harder stuff, like armor, but soft clothing will often yield to the harder fabric of a pack and the hard stuff inside it.

You might try to resculpt some detail with epoxy putty.

Though if it doesn't look that bad, perhaps just repositioning the pack is the best way to go.

Normally when things like this (and they tend to be small anyway) dont fit I will remove a bit here and there and putty it all up. Had to do the same for my SAFS girl I posted on here a while back....but when removing part of one and the other, usually another gap shows up.

Epoxy putty that has been applied and let dry for several minutes before starting to sculpt to shape will work fine.

Post pics when you are done!

Completely agree with my colleagues: remove a bit from each part keeping in mind that "soft things yield to hard" like plymonkey said.

You know what the easiest (and canon) solution is?  Throw some putty in the backpack joint, and mount it however it fits... there is no need for any parts modding or material removal.  The backpack is supposed to be a flexible mount, so it just moves to conform to posture as needed.
