That's SS camo. I doubt it's from the Africa campaign. Here's a good site with color pics. http://www.1944militaria.com/waffen_ss_camouflage.htm

There are several topics here on how to paint camo. I'm sure a search of "SS camo", or "how to paint SS Camo?" will generate useful results of older topics where people asked the same questions you have. If you get nowhere with that, I can link you.

Do you have access to a hobby shop? Seriously, the best resource is a book, like the Osprey and Squadron/Signal series'. They offer lots of pics (B&W though they may be) and several color plates painted by top military artists. There are also several books that have color photos of uniforms as well.

When you say Elite Infantryman, what are you refering to? An SS trooper? A Panzer Grenadier? A Fallschirmjager in one of the special ops ground units?

Most of my sources are for Russia in 43, but I'd say that field gray and reed green are safe for panzer crews. Black wouldn't be out of the question though, I suppose. I have pics of Tiger crews in black in spring 43, in Russia. If you can find pics of summer uniforms, you can get an idea of how those colors translated for the summer fabrics. That's what you'd most likely have seen in Italy.
