A little help please - Looking for Dragons or Dinosaur figures
Posted by gburdon on Tuesday, November 14, 2006 10:33 PM

Hello All;

I need a little help finding a Christmas present for my nephew. He's 7 and interested in Dragons, so being the great uncle that I am, I thought I would pick up a kit or two for him to start into modelling with.

So any suggestions would be helpful. As well anyone out there that has seen a copy of the Kalmbach Books - Dinosaur painting How-To book at their local hobby shop or maybe collecting dust on a shelf let me know.

Cheers;

Gregory

Don't know of any dragons, but Tamiya has a few dino kits out there.  They are kid-friendly snap kits too.

Dragons can be found in Fantasy wargames sites. So you might want to check GamesWorkshop or similar.

HeavyArty's right about Tamiya making a few dinosaur sets. They are easy to build but not snap together, at least not the Raptors I have.

Arty, Avus;

Thanks very much for the replies. I knew there had to be kits out there. I have checked a few of the Fantasy Gaming sites too, just trying to find some kits in a little larger scale to start him out on to learn the basics of painting.

Try looking in some of the gift stores like Spencers. They may have some reasonably priced pewter dragons.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Well these ain't toys, but McFarlane had released a full series of Dragons actionfigures that are actually really well painted and pretty low in price.  I'd suggest getting a bunch of them, re-prime them and let the boy repaint them afterwards.

Reaper minatures in Texas has the dragons you want, but they do not come cheap.

www.reapermini.com is the site, thier line is extensive and not nearly as expensive as GW stuff.

 Give them a try....they do fantastic mailorder!

Years ago there was a kit produced of one of the dragons from the Sinbad movies. I am not sure but believe Testors produced it. Also they are not kits but Books A Million has several nice Dungeons and Dragons dragon figures. Also try places that sell comic book figures or fantasy figures.

Hello All:

Thanks for all your help. I have talked it over with my sister and found that both my nephews are now model builders. So if I can't find Dragons/Dinosaurs they are already building Armour, Autos, and Aircraft. So I may have to shift focus to getting them some beginner references and some supplies in addition to a kit or two.

Cheers;

Just be forwarned, this Draco kit with the metal figure included is not for beginners. It is molded vinyl which requires a lot of trimming and fitting, and from my experience with the kit, theres a lot of work ahead.........................

David;

Thanks for the advice, I think I am leaving that one off my nephews build list for now, until he gets a few more under his belt.
