A Hitler 120mm finished...
Posted by SteveM on Saturday, December 16, 2006 9:19 AM

... and ready to be gifted to my friend for his 40th in a couple of hours(much to the horror of his wife). My first 120, and he's more dusty than I realized, thanks to mucho megapixel hindsight. Forgot to cover him up when I sanded the base last nightBanged Head [banghead], and don't have time to reshoot after blasting off the dust. This boy's gotta git to the party! Sorry for the slop. I still stink at photography, but here he is in all his glory...

Comments/suggestions welcome! Especially with photography... what am I doing wrong? Where are my colors?

Looks good. Based on the criticism you gave yourself regarding the dust etc. seems you already know the answers to your major problems.

As for the colors of the photos, check your white balance. Also, bounce your light or use a diffuser over them. The lights are washing out some of your detail.

Personaly, I like more color in the skin tones and some darker tones under the eyes, the hollows of the cheeks, under the cheek bones, under the fold lines of the face would make his face stand out a little more and give it some more depth and character. Not much, a little bit goes a long way at this scale.

But for the dust, I think your friend will like his gift. Definately start up a few conversations at the party.

Thanks, guys. My friend loved it, not so much the wife. But she has a good humor about it. Apparently, they have a war memorabilia room started already, and this piece fits right in (if not in back and a little higher than most pieces).

It's an unusual piece: I can't think of any other figure that stirs up the controversy that this one does/will. What do you guys think? Does this figure deserve to be built (moot point in my case)?

of course it deserves to be built but that is my opinion . i do not build WW 2 german models because i am a fan of what happened . we build because we are intrested in a certain time period and history. i am sure alot of people do not understand that but at least we have a support group here that understands each other lol

I have no problem with that, none at all. It really is strange that whenever you a model of Hitler or even something that has a swastika someone flies up in the air about it, but no one minds russian figures or vehicles with the hammer and sickle, even though Stalin killed 10 times as many innocents as Hitler. Oh well. At least it doesn't happen at model shows...

I would say that it doesn't bother me at all. I am a passionate of military from the past, and that's all it is......   the past................. history!    The major issue right now is that this kind of past.......   is recent.    You don't see anybody complaining about Genghis Khan or Alexander the Great (not sure of spelling). .........    The point is.....we have to stop complaining about what happenned............     Just know that it did! YOU CAN'T CHANGE IT !!!!!!!   It already happened! We have to accept the fact that a lot of people gave their lifes for it..... so that we can have a future!

Good and bad guys are part of it...........    this is what makes a good story........and history............   by the way....    I just love the work you did, very nice painting Thumbs Up [tup]

Well painted figure.

As to its appropriateness. I guess I'd have to consider the context of the war memorabilia room. Does it feature figures of other period leaders? Okay. Or is it a tribute to National Socialism. Only one person posting here knows the answer to that. Not so okay with me, but its the collector's house and his money and I'd be the last person to tell him he couldn't do this.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

I don't mind it. What I mind is blatant things like putting the Presidents on Mt. Rushmore. The Black Hills are holy to the Sioux and then the Gov't. allows that? Wrong, wrong, wrong.
As long as the figure isn't to glorify Hitler. But then again I guess it is a free country. Good job on the figure.

Steve,

The only one that will find controversy in it is you. Build, sculpt, paint what appeals to you and whatever tickles your fancy. There is only one person in this world that you have to answer to. You.

Now, should you start painting for the edification of others, there is this really nice figure of a mounted hussar you could paint for me....Wink [;)]Make a Toast [#toast]
