W.I.P. Seil Models Viking Warrior (10th Century AD)

I've decided to quit plastic for awhile, and gone back to buildin' and paintin' some heavy metal! This little number came in nine parts, and is an exquisite offerin' from Seil.
This doesn't actually come in at 54mm, it ends up measurin' in at 65mm, and  with the base added, a total of 75mm.

Thanks man!

This is where I am with this at the moment. The whole figure was undercoated in automotive matt black paint. I'm not sure about other people, but I always undercoat my figures in black. I'll use a dark grey if a figure is to be painted in predominantly light colours.

The cloth padded armour under the chainmail had a thin coat of Vallejo Middlestone. It was then shaded with a mix of Burnt Umber/ Lamp Black and then highlighted with Yellow Naples Hue straight from the tube. An additional highlight was then added with a mix of Yellow Naples Hue and Titanium White.

Jus' let me know if i'm borin' ya' with my colour mixes. Hahaha

The wolf's pelt is half finished, although I may post shade the insides of the folds a little more, with some oil colour!

Woah! that is a great pose. and even though all you have done is a tiny bit of leather peeking out from underneath the Chain mai, youve already turned it into a beauty. I dont get it how you belnd all those washes and highlights and everything to make it looks just perfect on your figures. Great work!

Thanks for lookin' Ian and Steve.

The wolf's pelt is finished now!

I used Vallejo Tan Yellow for the basecoat, and highlighted with a mix of Yellow Ochre and Yellow Naples Hue, for the third and final highlight coat, a small amount of titanium White was added. The shade coats consisted of a mix of Burnt Umber and Lamp Black, with a final coat of Lamp Black on its own, to deepen the colour in the recesses.

Steve, I use oil paint. Jus' dab little spots of it onto the areas you want, and then with a soft clean brush blend it out, or in for the recesses. Same for the highlights. With oil paint a little goes a long way.

I use Winsor & Newton water soluble oils, which means no messin' around with smelly solvents, and my brushes only need be cleaned with water.

The tunic colour was basecoated with a custom mix of Vallejo Dark Prussian Blue and Pastel Blue. It was then shaded with mixes of Payne's Grey and Cobalt Blue Hue. After this had dried, I painted in the trim usin' Vallejo Pale Sand. Highlights were then applied, and they consisted of mixes of Cobalt Blue Hue and Titanium White.

So you're using Vallejo acrylic as a base, then shading with oils? If this is so, this is good news... I was thinking about doing this on some figs I'm working on because I haven't produced a wash on a figure yet that I like. But I'm nervous to try it.

Sorry to pick your brain so hard. I promise to let you work. Not now, but soonBig Smile [:D]

Stunning work, man.

Cheers Steve!

Yep!

In regard to washes, I only use 'em over metallic colours like armour and such, never anythin' else.

Well, i've been movin' along with this as you can see. The trousers were painted in thinned down Tamiya XF-65 Field Grey, shaded and highlighted. The oil colour hasn't fully dried yet and still has a slightly satin look to it, its always the way with oils. Some dry matt slower than others, i've found!

All these colours may look a little clean and pristine, but they'll be toned down with some weatherin' and pigments last thing.

Really amazing work eddie, and the base will look great. With the rock base and his position on top it will look like hes really standing on a cliff shouting to the gods or something, atleast thats how I envision the seen anyways. So....54mm would be around what scale in terms of 1/72,1/35,1/16? sorry, im not very good with mm scales.

I'm not sure of the scales.

This figure is listed as 54mm but came in at around 64mm, with the base added its a total of 75mm. Which is cool, i've never known a 54mm figure could ever get so big! Big Smile [:D]

Wow, thats amazing! I just checked a ruler to see how big your viking would be, and its so small! I thought it was like a big 1/16 figure or something, but I am amazed at how much detail you have put into such a small figure!! Keep it up, can't wait to see how you do the skin!

Thanks for lookin', guys!

I've made some more progress on this, now. All thats left to do, is the head and shield design. The boots will be painted when I fix the figure to its base, along with the weatherin'.

For the axehead I used some thinned GW Boltgun Metal straight from the pot, and then shaded and weathered it with a mix of Burnt Umber and Lamp Black. I don't think i'll be applyin' any blood effects, due to the meanin', tribute and dedication of this figure.

Ian, i've noticed on Ebay that there are guys offerin' this figure painted, but usin' Seil Models in-house painted figure images.

Showin' another persons work and not they're own, scares me! You don't know what kind of paintjob your gonna' get from these people. Not in a million years would I buy from these people, unless I had a sample of their work in front of me, with a guarantee of quality.

Here is the shield, finished.

I masked it off and airbrushed it Tamiya XF-57 Buff. Then free-hand I painted in thin guidelines for the shield design, with some thinned Vallejo Red. Havin' achieved the correct symmetry, blocked in the colour, and any stray lines were brush painted over with XF-57 Buff, thinned. Mixes of Burnt Umber and Lamp Black were then applied for shade effects.

Woah, that shield looks great! the nice shading, the perfect masking, and the metal look all look perfect! I just saw that new movie 300 about the Spartans, and although it has very little historical accuracy and iev never had interest in figures, the movies got me dying to build a spartan!

Been watching this thread a while and you are proceeding outstandingly!

It stunned me that you "primed" your figure in black. In my experience it's a great base for metals, i.e. chain mail and armor plates, but a pain to paint over with light colors. But I must say the result you're getting stands me corrected.

Regarding the scale discussion: figures have their own scales diffrent from armor or aircraft (like seamen who have their own terms differing from "normal" people). 54mm is about 1/32 this means that the figure is in 54mm scale but could actually be taller (tall persons or orcs) or smaller (small people or dwarfs).

Avus, I always paint with thinned down paint, so brush marks are not a problem. If you use Vallejo paint for your basecoats, then these will cover a black undercoat very well. Usually if I paint a figure with predominantly light colours, then i'll undercoat with a dark grey.

I've left it til now to mention to you guys that this wil be a tribute to my mother who died of cancer three weeks ago. I thought that the pose of this figure could be interpreted in many ways.
To me, it represents strength, courage, fortitude, bravery and loss, the first four my mother had in abundance in fightin' her disease, for nine years.

The base will have a custom sized, brass placque engraved with a tribute to her.
