The big reason for the price difference deals with the molds. Injected plastic kits (whether made by DML, Italeri, Tamiya, or anyone else) use a mold made of some form of metal (different companies use different metals). These molds can be used thousands of times before they become worn enough to require replacement. Resin kits on the other hand, are typically made from a silicon rubber (or similar material) that does not last nearly as long (maybe one hundred or so times) before it needs replaced. Resin is also a more expensive material to begin with. I have seen very good kits made in both medias (resin and plastic), but in the end, if you want the detail associated with the resin you will also be stuck with the higher price.
I hope this helped shed some light.

The figures are made from resin and are a much higher quality with way better detail than figures made by companies like Tamiya or Italeri. The only draw back with these figures is that you have to cut the parts away from the resin block they are molded to with a saw or Dremel tool. I would only recommend these kits to more experinced modelers.
Believe it or not the prices have come down since Verlinden split from the VLS corporation.
Good luck,
Pat

VLS has been around for a long time with an excellent reputation and great customer service. If you do not mind a slower delivery time, try this company. Excellent prices.

In the FSM magazine if you look at the ads for figures and such usually in the first and last few pages you see those figure kits made by VLS of a pair of soliders and what not but when you look at the price they are from $12 to $23 why are they so expenisve? Question [?]
