Idea for adding Heraldry/ coat of arms /insigna on figures
Posted by IanIsBored2000 on Friday, April 6, 2007 9:34 PM
Well, I was thinking of way to paint/mask or make a stencil for some intricate pictures/symbols on my 54mm Celt. And as I was browsing for some paint, I found my ziploc baggy full of unused decals from the handful of 1/35 armor kits Ive built, and on closer examimiation, realized many would be perfect for coats of arms, tribal symbols, heraldry, insigna, or maybe even tattoos for figures. Maybe this wouldnt work right, but it seems like a good idea. Heres some examples. Im sure decals from just about any genre of modeling would work for this.

Maybe it wouldnt be completely realistic, but im sure similar symbols have been used throughout history

On this sheet, I thought the bear, the roman numerals, or the shileds would look cool:

On this sheet, the white roosters or the colored cricles would look good:

This ones got an assortment of interesting symbols

Not the balkenkreuz crosses, but the white design in the middle I thought would work for something:

Maybe its not the best idea, but to me it seemed like a simple and way to add some detail to my Celt. Hope this helps someone.

Here are a few links that might help you with more historically accurate Celtic Knot and Zoomorphic tattoo designs utilized by both the Celts, Picts, and Vikings/Norse in varying degrees/designs. You could use these to print up some custom decals in the correct scale too:

I have many reference books on the subject of Celtic arts, however online links to usable symbols are few and far between sadly.

Cheers.
